Fixing Juwel Light Bar.

Hi all. Had a quick read though the thread and found a lot of useful info. but a couple of points you need to make sure of.
1) Make absolutely sure the light pack is unplugged!!
2)If replacing a ballast then get of of the same rating, or make sure your old rating is included in the range of the new one otherwise the lamps wont work.
3) For faults, firstly try replacing the lamp as its the easiest option. If the fault is still there, then if the lamp ends glow but dont light you need a new starter (turning the switch a couple of times will usually light it). If the light flashes then it probably the ballast.

Hi, on the most part I welcome comment on any post I take the time and trouble to write. However I do not appreciate comments that are made after it is obvious the person hasn't taken the trouble of reading the original post throughly!

1) Make absolutely sure the light pack is unplugged!!

After making sure it's not pluged in! remove the tubes.

2)If replacing a ballast then get of of the same rating, or make sure your old rating is included in the range of the new one otherwise the lamps wont work.

Right, before you start you need to source a replacment ballast. I checked out eBay and found there was a ready supply of just about every sort. As there are no seperate starters in the modern Juwel light bar then you need an electronic or digital balast. Mine, for instance needed a 2 x 18w T8 ballast (being there are 2 tube at 18w and it's a T8 type light)

3) For faults, firstly try replacing the lamp as its the easiest option. If the fault is still there, then if the lamp ends glow but dont light you need a new starter (turning the switch a couple of times will usually light it). If the light flashes then it probably the ballast.

If you have checked the tubes/switch/and plug fuse then your problem lays with this ballast.

Hi OP, firstly thanks for this! Its what brought me to this site!
I have the opportunity to buy a Juwel 125 for next to nothing because of this problem so I am obviously thinking about it! However, can I ask where did you source the material to make a section slightly larger to fit over the gap you create? Could I buy perspex sheets from ebay and use that?

Thanks in advance!

Hi thanks for your comments and sorry I have only just seen your query.

I used a piece of plastic from where I used to work but alas I no longer have that source. If you haven't already sorted it then I would suggest looking at your local large DIY stores and see what water/drainage fittings they have with a large enough area to cut a section out of. Perspex/acrylic could be used, yes.

Let me know your progress (PM?)

Hi Great post cant believe it still going thats how good it is.
here is my question.
If i buy a new ballast t8. Can i buy one with a higher watt output.
mine is 25 watt but i can get 35 watt or higher which would be brighter, i know
i can get the 35 watt tubes.

Plus the ballast i have taken out as 3 output connecters but the ones i have seen have
6 output.

all the best

I'm guessing that as long as the ballast wattage matches the tube wattage then it should be ok. The other thing to look for is tube length as ballasts are linked to that too.

Glad some of you are getting some mileage out of this artical :good:

My own unit is still going strong dispite being almost completely waterlogged daily by condensation!

Having been made redundant last week I should be collecting light bars and re-conditioning them  mind you, would have to go some to pay the mortgage :look:

How much for the 125 light unit?

HI All,

Can anybody offer any advice on using this phillips one (Bottom) intstead of the 8 pin one(Top). It has 7 connectors but number 4 is not used i think so that leaves 6 holes.

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi Doresy/any lighting guru out there,

Love this thread and the fact it gone on forever, and its great to see so many people helped out!!

I have received a new Osram t8 twin 18w ballast with 4 connections, which arrived last week, i've opened up my Rio 125 lightbox today to find 3 connections on the current Juwel one!

I've tried all sorts of combinations but to no avail, i've added pics of the two layouts in the hope you can add your [insert disclaimer here] "electrical" advice, any ideas?

Hopefully someone has experienced the same and has a solution?

Thanks

hi all i need help now i have change the tubes and the ballast and the fuse , and still no lites working i give up plz helpppppppppppp

For M@EM, before you start, try checking everything you have, not just the lamps and ballast. Some other common areas for problems are the switch and wiring connections. If I have a tough one, the first and easiest thing for me is to check all the connections. I can't count how often this has cured a problem. If your fixture uses a starter, replace it. They are so cheap it is not worth trying to repair a fixture without first replacing the starter. If connections and ballast are good with a new light tube, there is not much left but the switch. Try bypassing it by simply wiring around it and see if the light works when you plug it in. If it does, the switch is faulty and can either be replaced or, if you run lights on a timer like I do, you can remove it and wire the fixture ballast directly to the power cord and run off your timer.

Hi all, i have the same issue...

i have changed the fuse - no luck
changed the plug - no luck
removed the switch (as i changed the plug, i just wire after switch) - no luck
im going to attempt cutting open the bar this week - is there any starters in it at all ?

i think it's a rio 180 - 2 x 30w T8 bulbs.

if not then im assuming it's the ballast that needs replacing.

and the cheapest i can find the ballast for is about £15 is that about right?

Hi all I've opened up the unit and the ballast is 2x36w but my bulbs are 30w, should I replace with a 2x30w or 36w??

Guys can you help me with the wiring on my new ballast.

Thanks
