Yes, the tube is in 2 separate pieces. Use 1 tube for smaller tanks or both for a deeper tank.

Both, to do just a water change just keep the tube above the substrate. It also has a clip so you can regulate the water flow by pinching the hose with it.

The bacteria resides on the substrate and the filter media. Cleaning the substrate and preforming water changes will not harm the bacteria.

In my opinion, the Hygger works just as well as the Python does. The Python is a much nicer vacuum but is much more expensive. Now that is just for the vacuum only setups. For your needs with a small tank the Hygger will do just fine for less money. But, the decision is up to you.
I'm very happy with my Hygger and it has not failed me as of yet.

How should I clean the gravel every once in a while? I really hate the idea of having to suck the end of a tube...
Any more options?

Get 2 to 3 nerites. They do the job really well.

Just did the api test today to my other beta tank and the results are promising ..
But Now Im wondering how I should clean the test tube so its safe to use again?
