I would be very suprised if your Nitrates are dropping. Unless you have live plants in the tank the only realistic way to remove Nitrates is by changing water.

The tank only has gravel and an airstone at the moment and is as empty as my stomach - lunch calls!
The colour of nitrates is over 80ppm but i am not sure if it is over 160ppm as it is bright red but not the dull red of 160ppm. My question is whether that bright red is typical of nitrates being off the scale or just below 160ppm?
Was going to post a pic of the colour but dropped 2 tubes and broke them so after i stopped pmsl i decided not to risk it!
Just being cautious at this delicate stage.

From you description it sound more like 80ppm rather than 160ppm, the dull red of 160 is very obvious when its in the tube.
How did you drop 2 test tubes, 1 i can understand, but 2?

Lucky it wasnt all 4! They were on the window sill. One got knocked over which knocked the others and the two that fell on the floor broke as they had water in them!
