I don't know if there has already been done a thread about this somewhere on the forum in the past, but i thought it would be helpful to do a thread on commonly used fishkeeping abbreviations and what they mean .
Anyhoo, one's i know of from the top of my head are;
LFS: local fish store
LPS: Local pet store
OFS: Online fish store
BN plec: bristlenose plec
RTBS: red tailed black shark
RTS: red tailed shark
WCMM: white cloud mountain minnow
UGF: under gravel filter
WPG: watts per gallon
MTS: Abbreviation used for either Malaysian Trumpet Snails, or "multiple tank syndrome" (basically addiction to fishkeeping)
ICH: The fish parasite ichthyophthirius, also known as Whitespot (or White Spot).
HOB filter: Hang On Back filter
GPH: gallons per hour
DIY: do it yourself
CO2: carbon dioxide
And some more indepth ones;
PH: from potential of Hydrogen- PH is a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution and, therefore, its acidity or alkalinity. The pH value indicates whether a solution is acidic or alkeline (less than 7 is acidic, more than 7 is alkeline).
KH: Carbonate Hardness. A measurement of the amount of dissolved carbonate and bi-carbonate ions in water- one degree of hardness equals 17.9 PPM- it is do to with the buffering capacity of the water.
GH: Total Hardness (also referred to as General Hardness). A measurement of the amount of magnesium and calcium dissolved in water, one degree of hardness equals 17.9 ppm. It is to with the buffering capacity of the water.
RO water: Water that has been purified through the process of reverse osmosis.
Plec/pleco: abbreviation often used for members of the loricarid family of armored catfish and similar catfish, not just hypostomus plecostomus.
NH3: ammonia- a toxic by-product of fish metabolism and decaying organic materials
NO2: nitrite- nitrifying bacteria can convert ammonia into nitrite
NO3: Nitrate- it is the last stage in the aquarium life cycle and is converted from nitrite
Can you add anymore to this list? I know there are loads of abbreviations certainly used for all sorts of fish, but i know hardly any of them.
