Kevin - Yes you can eat me, if you wanted too. But I am not known as an eating fish.

Clue 1: Alligator gars have very large and hard scales, which make it hard for them to turn in tight spaces.

Clue 2: The world record for a rod caught Alligator gar is 297lb. but they have been recorded at well over 300lb

As to the close to South America. They live in the southern states of North America.
