Did you know the proper way to set up and cycle your tank before adding your first fish?

We didn't! We got lucky that we didn't lose more than one fish when we set up our first tank.

hey

wen i first got my 15 gal i only had 9 guppys that i had raised since i was 8. i neva knew anything about cycling so i just put em in. and they neva died. and after that no fish died except wen i put anutha fish in that didnt go with them. but now i knwo all i need to know.

I didn't know much. And the aquarium setup I got instructed us to put it all together and add fish  We must be leading a charmed life because so far no fish have died.Even our shrimp colony and frog are thriving happily. It's funny about the shrimp.I put about a dozen in with the cold water fish, fully expecting them to be eaten. Some were instant snacks. The rest apparently hid really well.I didn't see them for a couple of days. Then they gradually came out.Now they move fearlessly about the tank and at feeding time they come right along with the fish and grab whatever falls to the bottom.Lots of fun to peer into the tanks and spot them among the ornaments and all.My kid insisted on getting one of those treasure chest/diver thingees and it was hilarious to see a couple of the larger shrimp attempting to make off with the diver. They each had a foot in their shrimpy clutches  :hyper:

No i didn't know anything i even change my water 100% when i first got a tank and i have 15 fish on it......They died one by one and I finally went to the net and do some research and found this forum... I got a lot of help from the pin topics from the beginner section and some of the members who kindly help me through all my problems....now I have my 33 gallon tank running for almost 6 months now and never had a problem.....

No way...back when i first got an aquarium there was no internet or forums or any thing. Thank god the fish were tough as nails back then cause they were really on their own. I knew nothing about the cycle..."its just a phase that fish go through some make it some dont" ... and you think LFS give bad advice today   ;)

Definitely not. My first fish were Aquababies in that 1/4 gallon. They didn't stay in that long... before long I bought a 5 gallon tank, left the filter running for 2 days, and then added the fish. Every month I'd remove the fish and do a 100% water change  Luckily, my hardy white clouds made it through everything!

A couple years later after getting the 5 gallon, I found this site

<<edited for spelling :X >>

Never did any reasearch till I became a member of this forum and everyone started talking to me.

Thanks again ladies and gentlemen.

No, I didn't. My first set-up was my 40l with some goldfish. The very first time I did that it did not go well. The second time was a few years later and I took a friend who has a lot of fish along with me. Only problem was, she didn't have a clue either. I know that now. Luckily most of my first fish (2nd time round) survived. I have one with me and the others went to live in a pond.

Nope. Our first fish (other than the one I had when I was 7) where inherited. A couple more were rescued from a lazy jerk off who was too lazy to take care of them anymore. But we knew absolutely nothing about fish at the time. Now we are researching our new setup.

i did my reseach. lots of it.

however i didnt find out about cycling because at that time i didn't have internet and there was nothing about it in any of the books i read. all my fish were fine though. in fact the first fish i put in, lived longest.

I got my first tank when I was 10 as a gift. It was a 10 gallon, and we had no clue. Never lost any fish until we gave it away, never used chemicals and never did H2O changes.

Now, I know better
