First Planted Tank hand holding required...!

Just had a look back through some of my old posts to find this...

Dose it work?

My local plant 'specialist' gave me a good guide that has come good...
Volume of water (in Litres) x KH (in degrees) / 50
so our 200L with a KH of 9 = 36 bubbles per minuite.
Now that we have near 100% desolving we have a PH of 7.0 and a co2 content of about 28mg :)

Dinos tank (125 * 5.5) / 50 = 13.75 bubbles per minuite.

doesn't sound like it does - Are the bubble gone by the time they get to the top of the ladder?

I suppose a higher % dissolved helps.

Sorry gf! I wasn't nit-picking, honest! :D

I just thought I'd mention it before someone asked, how do you count the bubbles when they're travelling that fast? :p

Am i doing this correct

My tank is 160 litres

Kh is 1.7 degrees or 30mg/l

so 160 x 1.7 = 272 / 50 = 5.44 bubbles per minute

Now im useing 2 ladders and i would guess without auctually counting that im getting (well auctually curiosity got the better of me and i did count)

1 ladder is produceing a bubble every 5 seconds so for 1 minute thats 12 bubbles the other ladder is produceing a bubble every 8 seconds and for 1 minute that is 7.5 bubbles and this gives me 32ppm of co2, my Ph is 6.2.

Anyway interesting if it did work, maybe im doing it wrong.

not quite, I would say they are about a 10th of the size they were when they start at the bottom.

I thought after the change to gf's CO2 recipe yesterday in one of my cannisters, I would check to see if it had made any difference.

My reading tonight:

pH - 7.0
KH - 7.2
CO2 - 22ppm

I think if I change the mixture in the second cannister I will hit the magic 30ppm!

Something does strike me as strange though...KH value:

24.07.05 KH 100
27.07.05 KH 120 *
28.07.05 KH 130

(* I expected the hardness to remain constant and presumed I had mis-counted so used 100 in my calculations)

is this expected?

thanks George, thats' what I would have expected too...I'll keep a close eye on things over the next couple of days...I'd be happier knowing that everything was stable before starting the Ei project!

My Kh never changes, always dismally low at 1.7 -_-

due to water changes?

oh, didn't think of that. maybe. I'll look at my notes (been keeping a record of test for a couple of months now).

well, tonights test showed hardness at the same level as yesterday...130 (7.2) although pH seemed to be too green for 7.0 and to blue for 6.8 - I'm going to make a stab in the dark here and say pH is 6.9 this puts CO2 at 27ppm...the magic 30 gets ever closer!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the extra 3ppm. Kits aren't reliable enough for you to know that's a true level anyway, as long as you're in the ballpark and it remains fairly stable (30 +-5ppm) then all is well.

BTW it's great to see you've gotten into the hobby so deeply and quickly - I look forward to seeing the results.

Zig im in the same boat as you my kh test changes colour first drop so i add bicarb in my water changes- 10 ml per weekly water change (50L for me) gives me 143.2 ppm or 8dkh
