First Few Days Into Cycle

If you are only going to put a single beta as the initial stocking of the first tank that's being fishless cycled then you don't really need to get your ammonia dose back up to 5ppm, the 3ppm qualifying week will be ok for such a light first stocking. Don't forget that testing needs to continue frequently for the first few weeks past the end of the fishless cycle. Also, whenever you take in a new tank you can never be sure of the previous maintenance despite how it may look visually, so be sure to begin a testing log on it too and to begin with plenty of deep gravel cleans. Make sure it was using a significantly different water source by some chance even though its from only 2 miles away. Sounds like a deal you couldn't refuse! A bargain! WD

Thanks WD,

helpfull as always. Glad to hear that I should be good with just the betta at 3ppm. I will not add anything else for another month anyways mainly due to cash flow!

I understand about the other tank. It seems to me like he was pretty genuine about everything. Explained any current algy growth and his maintance (he had a log) and explained he doesn't maintain much in it and the algea growth that could be seen is generally what he has all the time which is fair enough. I will also make sure it is all good and cleaned. There are 4 of us working on moving, cleaning etc when I get it so should be alright.

I have already tested his water to see and it is pretty close to mine. Not quite as pure but this shouldn't be a problem we are transporting around 75% original water and only adding 25% new so means that it can be climatised over time to any differences with my water etc. (hopefully).

Will let you know how it all goes tomorrow and will try and get some pictures sorted as well.

Kind Regards,

Adam

Well I have got through my fishless cycle now and have my Betta in the tank for the last two days and also have 3 Kuhli loaches that my friend gave me.

All is working well. My new tank is up and running although I did loose about 5 cardinals although I think this is because of the stress and maybe the difference in PH levels although not sure.

The 3 shrimp survived and I still have 6/7 cardinals. I have got 4 bristlenose catfish that I believe 3 are female with 1 male. Not sure on the other fish will get some pics and start a new topic about the new tank. Thanks to all that have contributed with the fishless cycle.

Plants seem OK still and I have reduced the dosing of excel and TPN+ to a minimum to see how things change over the next few weeks.

Guess this topic is closed now that it is finished. Must get some pics of both tanks asap.

Kind Regards,

Adam
