Im currently searching for my first car. I plan to get one that's older and not quite in perfect condition so that i can fix it up. I'm planning on getting a Ford Mustang somewhere between the years 1995 and 2000.

I was curious what your first car was? Was it new or used? Did you buy it yourself?

Sheesh, a mustang as a first car? :grr:

Jk, lol. That sounds sick. Actually don’t have a car yet, simply don’t need one. My parents are ok with me driving one of our three cars around. :)

My parents are fine with that as well but I really enjoy working on cars so i want to get an old one and fix it up. :)

I think you've set you sights pretty high, a car that will have a fairly high value used and./ or had the snot beaten out of it. I taught myself auto repair so encourage your path, made sure my kids could at least do a brake job. Back then I had to use libraries  .

Mine is a 2011 ford mustang. My friend got a nissan, not sure what type

An old car is not a 1995-2000 :)
An old mustang is one from the late 60s and early 70s. They are the ones worth money. However, their safety features sucked.

My first car was a Toyota corona (late 60s model I think). It was full of rust and leaked oil. The mechanic jury rigged a tin can to one of the engine hoses to collect the oil that dripped out. Every few days we would pour the oil back into the engine.

I was coming home from work one day and got pulled over for speeding. The speedo read 64kph and I was in a 60 zone. The cop said I was doing 74kph. I said the speedo only said 64. I got a $75 fine and a couple of demerit points. Turns out the car originally came out with 13 inch wheels but someone had upgraded it and put 14 inch wheels on it. That caused the speedo to read lower than the actual speed you were doing. Gotta watch out for that with some cars. People put low profile tyres on or bigger wheels and the speedo can end up reading the incorrect speed.

My next car was a 1974 XB Ford falcon panel van. It had a 6 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual gearbox (column shift). It was a lovely car and had heaps of room in it. I got rid of it when my friend put his foot through the floor. It was rusted badly in the floor.

Next car was a 1974 XB Ford falcon coupe. My sky blue Mad Max mobile. It disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 2015. Not fuplie happy about that. Can't replace it and if any turn up on the market, they sell for over $100,000.

If you are going to work on the car, try to get one without rust. Mechanical work is relatively easy but panel beating takes a little more skill.

My first car was a 1980 Datsun 380C, big old beast...I then went to the 1980 Datsun 280ZX, the 280ZX had an effect on me cos from that car onwards it was almost every car was a 2 door sporty thing.....my favourite day use car was a Pontiac Sunbird 3.8 V6 that I bought for 500 quid at RAF/USAF Lakenheath...it used to make me laugh. No door keys so had to use a screwdriver to enter via the hatchback, crawl through the car to get to the driving seat, got a few raised eyebrows with that car. The last car (and one that I taught my friend's son to drive and he used it to take his driving test - he passed first time) was my wonderful 1991 Toyota MK3 Turbo Supra...loved that car and miss it terribly.

First car was a used Pontiac Lemans hatchback. A garbage korean (kia) rebrand work by GM, it's a shame that it wore the Pontiac badge and the Lemans name, but I loved that thing. After a mechanic gave it a good tuneup it served me well. Second car was a brand spanking new Saturn sedan, which I promptly crashed about 2 weeks in. Nothing major, but it just sucked and the car was never the same afterwards. Still, a decent ride and one where I worked a lot on (was in my early 20s so I did some modifications, etc, nothing major, but I did most of the work myself, and also most of the maintenance). Third car was a used Lexus suv (about 6 years old, I want to say), and had it for almost 10 more. It was a great car. I was sad to let it go but the maintenance required to bring it up to speed at some point became more than the car was worth, so I sold it and bought another used one, my current one. Lincoln suv. Bought it also at about 5 years old, by now it's over 10 years old and you wouldn't notice. Comfy, great smooth ride, powerful when needed and has space for pretty much anything.

Never buy new, ever. You lose 20% of the value you paid just driving off the lot..

Never buy too old neither, except when you know what to do to bring it up to spec and what the costs will be.

For a daily driver, I'd buy a used, reliable economy car. Either Japanese or American I know the conventional wisdom says that the Japanese make the most reliable cars, but having driven both, there's nearly no difference at this point, plus what makes a car "japanese" or "american" these says anyway, they're all made in the same places and the reliability scores are on par except for truly exceptional (or mediocre) years/models.

Drive the beater and save up to buy a true classic "old" 'stang, and work on it at your pace.

My 2 cents

My first car was an MK2 Cortina, it was my mum's Dad gave it to me. When I lost my license it sat in the garage and the motor seized, I sold it for 2 dozen bottles of beer.
