my dad got home from a gun school-thing earlier, and my mother told him i bought another Betta.

"ANOTHER fish?"

and my mother proceeded to tell him it was probably better than me buying cigarettes, so i piped up with, "Or drugs, or alcohol, or..." and he was like. "Well... you're right," and dropped it there, when he usually would've gone off telling me they're all going to freeze to death and die during the winter.

which, i am preventing by clever use of lighting, temporary heat pads at night, and upping my room temperature from 64-66* to 68* constant.

and i thought i'd never win ^^

Yay!!!! Go "BettaBoyz"'s mom!!! Cool!

I've wanted fish for a few years. My mom wouldn't have minded me getting some, but my dad always said no. I think he said something about them being too messy or the aquarium spilling or something like that  -_- I would have taken care of them...I'd already proven many times over I could and would take care of critters. I had a herd of goats, a flock of chickens and ducks, a few horses, a few sheep, rabbits, dogs, and cats. Who's going to notice a few fish? It's not as if the fish shed hair all over the house or bark, moo, neigh, oink, cluck, crow, or baa and make lots of noise and people generally aren't allergic to them (far as I know) :D

Now that I've moved out and have my own room in the dorm, I've finally gotten fish :D  I like them very much. I think my parents would like them too.

Anyhow....

My parents are the reason I don't have more bettas (an money) they just don't seem to want me to buy anymore!
My mom freaked when I told her how many fish I have in my dorm room! It's funny. I have a 100 gallon in my closet (It takes up the ENTIRE closet...lol), an empty 85 gallon under my bed, a 20 gallon next to my computer, and 10 5 gallon Beta tanks on a shelf in my closet, and 6 beta hexes on my computer desk! For a grand total of.....50 fish!! :D

Any my boyfriend thinks my four tanks are a lot! I have a 10 gallon, a five gallon, and two one gallons. I *could* fit a BIG tank in my closet...never thought of that.... <brainstorming...> Now, if only I had the money.... :-( :X I have 18 fish, I think, and three Ghost Shrimp. Then there's the issue of what to do with them over break....I'm still working on that one.

Yay for fish in dorm rooms!!!!!

Blah I am worried about winter break....I do not know whether they turn the power off or not...I am kinda nervous about it. Are you in college? If so where? And what do you think the probability of them shutting the power off would be?

At Northern Arizona University we have Winter classes, so maybe I don't have to worry...I am just freaking out..

Aaahhhhhh..... :looks enlightened:

So, I talked with my parents tonight. I told my mom I thought she and Dad would enjoy a fish tank. They could sit there and watch the fish and relax... I can just see it...they would have a 30 or 40 or 50 gallon tank with black edges and cabinet...lots of live plants, a school of tetras...aaahhhhh.... :) My mother vetoed the idea. She said maybe if there was somebody to clean the tank for her every work... :shakes head: So, fish tanks do take some maintenance, but for someone who only works two hours a day (she's a teacher and it was the only job she could find in our area & my dad has a good job so my mom doesn't *have* to work, she just enjoys teaching and wants to work) you'd think there would be enough time to maintain a fish tank. Anyhow, I know some people just aren't in to fish... Strange people.... :p

Yep, I'm in college up in Northern Wisconsin. So far north I'm only a mile south of Lake Superior. I don't think they shut the power off over break, at least not up here. If the shut the power off here all of the water pipes would freeze. They do ask us to unplug all of our computers and stuff like that. Ask an RA or a professor or someone like that whether or not they turn off the power.

I'm concerned about the fish going so long without water changes and obviously three weeks is a little long for them to go without food :/ I'm strongly considering moving my fish over to my boyfriend's house during Christmas break. It would be a pain, but... The RHD of my building has a lot of fish too and she may be in the area over break, so I could probably get her to check on my fish when she checks on hers. I don't know...it's a dilemma.

I may be staying with my boyfriend here in Flagstaff, so I will be able to come and check on my fishies everyday, as long as they don't kill the power.

You could show her those python gravel vacs that hook right up to the sink, she may be surprised at how easy it really is to keep a tank if you don't have to drag around buckets of water
