Hi there.

I am writing for a friend. One of their fish has developed fin rot. Their tank has been running for 4 years now and is cycled up. They are wondering which medication to use that will not harm their live plants and filter media (so the tank doesn't end up cycling).

Thanks!

Ammonia 0.25
Natrate 0
Nitrite 0
PH 7.8

Sorry but their tank isn't cycled if they have any ammonia showing or no nitrate as you say. How did they cycle it, do you know? And have they done anything recently that could harm their filter bacteria? (not dechlorinating water, fish death, overfeeding, power cut, washing the media under a tap etc).

For fin rot the best treatment is clean water and lots of it. They need to be changing some water (I'd say about 50%) once a day until the ammonia is back to 0 consistently. Then if it doesn't resolve itself a lot of people recommend myxazin.

its cycled nothing changed or added to it. is myxazin safe for the filter and plants?

I just got back from seeing my friends tank. They sold me Melafix as they didn't have any Myxazin.

Now i hope i understand the dosage.. It's a 30 gallon tank. 5ml per 5gal of water, so i put 15ml and repeat.

Hmmm a 30 gallon tank. 30 gallon divided by 5 gallon = 6

6 x 5ml = 30ml so thats what your dosage is.
