Ive just bought a Juwel Vision 180, very nice tank but Im not too keen on keeping the original heater and filter system.

I really want to go for an external filter, I will be keeping a nice little community tank.

What filter would people suggest is the best to use?

thanks

Dan

Im assuming its a 180 litre aquarium as thats what i seem to remember.

A TetraTec EX700 (or the model up from it) would suit your tank and is external. Very quiet. Can get it on Zooplus for £45 including delivery when its around £80 in the shops round by me.

Keeps my tank whater extremely clear.

A bit more expensive, but i went for the eheim professional II 2026. Fantastic filter, far less maintenance than the juwel internal one, stats have been great, and a noticeable difference in how clear the water was. Very happy. But... its about £100 including the media (sponges, tubes and balls.. oooer)

I can't say if it is better or worse than the one that Daz recommends, but i'm happy with it.

Cheers

Ive been having a little look at the eheim pro 2 actually... Just wondered what peoples thoughts generally on external filters.

I have previously been using internal filters & dont go too much on the performance of the Juwel internal filters...

Plus that big black box takes up a hell of a lot of space!!! LOL!

You don't see too many complaints about the eheim filters.. In general the external filters are usually more performant, but i don't have too much personal experience with them apart from my own eheim external, which as i said has been great.

A lot of people have been more than happy with fluval range as a cheaper option, although some people have had problems with them after a year or so. It depends on personal views and budget really.

I'm just lazy, and eheim is great for lazy people. My eheim 2026 does the self priming, which avoids sucking on a pipe to start the flow of water. I don't think you would regret that particular model. I use the 2026 on my juwel Rio 180 tank, and it has the potential be used on tanks almost twice that size. This means that i am overfiltering to an extent, but suits my ambitions to move across to african cichlids, which need to be overstocked a bit to control aggression, and so requires overfiltering (if there is such a thing).

Lazy person here :D I've got the Eheim 2026 running on both my Juwel Vision 180's - only have to give the filter/sponges a good wash/clean out every 2-3 months or so (clean the pipes at the same time too) - SO much easier

That sounds just like the filter I want!! lol... :D

No point peeing about with small externals, get the biggest you can afford as this will future proof your tank and you will be amazed withthe water quality. I have the same tank an bought a TetraTec EX 1200 external. Havent loooked back since.

Not a problem mate!, Ive ordered my filter tonight so am probably going to be asking the same questions myself!!! :)

I only have a little 15 gallon at the moment, should I run the 2026 on that until my 180 litre is delivered (obviously alongside the internal i have at the moment!!)?, it may speed up all that lovely bacteria??

I would.. just check it doesn't turnt he tank into a whirlpool, and make sure it fits ;-) You can use the lever to slow down the throughput slightly anyway.

I will try to get a pic of my spraybar for both of you..
