Hey can you plz tell me the good amount of each of these ferts in my tank. In ppm plz. (plz dun say things like... 'one pinch'. I need them in PPM )

1.nitrate
2. phosphate
3. potassium
4. calcium
5. magnisium
6. iron

I think i've got everything there.
If i missed anything plz include.

thank you.

Is this a high light tank? If so

1.nitrate - 10-30ppm
2. phosphate - 1-3ppm
3. potassium - 20ppm
4. calcium - ?
5. magnisium - ?
6. iron - ?

Try google for the other three.

WOW those are expensive for such cheap elements mixed up together.
They must be making some heavy profits...

LOL now i feel like selling them on ebay :)

They are quite cheap really considering he only probably buys 100kg of each at a time (more likely less)

These chemicals are cheap but only when you buy a full load in bulk (i.e. 1 full tipper of 24 tonnes!!!)

Believe me because thats what I do for a living. and when I mean cheap I mean it.

for example:

KN03 is £280.00 per tonne (if you buy a full load) = £0.28 per kilo

If you tried to buy just 100kg then yould be paying a lot closer to £2000.00 per tonne = £2.00 per kilo

So there you go Greg Watson's prices are good and don't forget 1lb will likely last you for 1 year.

I don't know about K2HPO4 cuz i've never heard of it before i researched fertilizer,
but i know for a fact that potassium nitrate is a cheap cheap cheap substance.

The only things we used in my poor high school was water, and potassium nitrate.
Potassium is what... maximum $1 per pound??
Nitrate, if you buy in aq solution, is like another dollar.

Mixed them, precipitate forms, and bam there it is. Potassium nitrate for $2.

But then again, time is valuble. Who the hell wants to go through all that to save $5. :)

P.S. By the way was riccia shipped?

I think if your reasoning were correct then J Arthur Bowers would already be mixing it themselves when manufacturing fertilisers (This is one of the UK top 3 compost and fertiliser manufacturers) and not paying £280 per tonne for it, so therefore I doubt it but I am no scientist, just the guy who makes sure that if 100 tonnes of Pot Nit is needed next week then 100 tonnes of Pot Nit arrives.

here are a few prices for you when buying 30 tonnes at a time, which is tipped into bays and then Big Volvo trucks scoop up 4 tonne at a time and put into hoppers which are mixed through machines to make full fertilisers. (this is my argument add 1 more hopper and use your 2 ingredients and change the formulation on the machine. Sorry I'll believe the scientists)

Pot Nitrate KN03= £280.00/tonne (comes in from Israel via Belgium)
MKP KH2PO4 Mono potassium phosphate = £465/tonne (comes in from Israel via Germany)
Potassium Sulphate K2SO4 = £160.00/tonne (Wow it comes from UK although is shipped from Israel)

Yes they're cheap if you divide it as 28p for 1kg but you are not going to be able to buy it for 28p per Kg.

I think I will tell my buyers to go to the supermarket tomorrow as its cheaper off the shelf. lol

p.s. Yes I posted it at dinner today. In a plastic bag within a jiffy bag and I included a hairnet incase you want to use it

Andy

50lb bags run about 22$ for K2SO4, KH2PO4 and KNO3 at the ag turf place down the road.
I doubt anyone here will ever need that much of any of these.
Sell to your friends, give some away etc.

Tom Barr

so i guess this Greg Watson guy is the cheapest person to buy off from if you live in North America...

...sigh
This would be a good time to know someone who works in laboratories...
18year-old has limited connections.... bugger

Try your local garden centre, I've recently learnt that KSO4 is KSO4 whether you use it on the lawn or in the tank. But check the ingredients list to make sure its not got anything else in it. The same goes for KH2PO4 and KNO3.

Sam

:stupid:

Yes very important that.

Just because a product says Sulphate of Potash on the box in the garden centre it may be a mixture with K2SO4 as it's main ingredient otherwise different companies wouldn't bother selling it, as people would just buy the cheapest.

It would also mean that we would just go to the garden centre and buy a big box of General Purpose Plant Food for a fiver or whatever is rather than our mixes, because it contains N,P,K and trace but and it is a very important but.....

.....Is that all it contains?

Is there anyone with a home laboratory on here?

Oh well I'll try and get the actual formulations used at work on Monday (but don't tell our competitors our recipe) :shifty: :hey:

Andy

well, othe then the fact the general fertilizers contain very high phosphate level, aren't they okay to use?
I mean, people are so afraid of high level of PO4 cuz it causes algae boom.

If i can control that, i think i am better off with general fertilizers that come in tiny circles.
Instead of weighting everyday, trying to reach certain ppm with different types of substances.
Although you won't get the 'desired' ppm. Heck who cares if you go over 10ppm over the values you want.
And the best of all, for $20, you get 30kilo box that will last generations of your family~!

Anyways, i will try it with lawn fertilizer that contain a bit less phosphate and see what happens.
(Of course, all this will take in my experimental tank with volunteered platies and plants :) )
