I have just added my first fish....4 Leopard Danios.

The guy in the shop said I should give them a "few flakes of food once a day"

Is this about right?

Also, I leave the house for work at 6.15am....is 6am a good time to feed them....or should I feed them when I get home...say 8pm or so?.....

.......I prefer to drop a few flakes at a time as opposed to just throwing in a complete feed all at once.....and a few at a time would 'hold me back' in the morning!.....Or is it ok to just 'throw it in'?!!

Thanks for your thoughts :)

the man in the shop is right only nce a day but i think give them a small bit at 6 am and then a bit at 8 pm the fish do get hungry but dont give them much more fish die for over feeding then under feeding

Danios are very fast, active fish, so I am sure that they notice immediately when food is put in the tank. That being so, you can feed them twice a day, but watch and make sure they eat it all within one to two minutes. If there is food unconsumed after that time, you are overfeeding. But, a small amount twice a day is just fine.

I agree with guppy about the twice a day feeds 6am and 8pm as these are well spaced.

You dont need to stop and watch them feeding or 'drip feed' them a few flakes at a time. If you do feed just a couple of flakes at a time you may be overfeeding a more dominant and outgoing fish and underfeeding a more shy fish. Watch how they eat at the 8pm feed when you do have time to observe them, this will give u a good idea of just how much food to give at a time so you just feed them and go in the mornings.

The one rule is not to overfeed as this will polute the water, overload the filters (especially as a new setup).

Think about getting a timer for your lights - they are really cheap - as you are out of the house for over twelve hours a day. This will allow you to set the lights for, say, midday and off again at 10pm-midnight. This gives them a regular pattern of night and day which reduces stress and gives you the oportunity to view them when at home. You can then feed them in the evenings when both they and you are active and awake. :D

As for light timers....I do have mine on a timer...it is on from 10am - 8pm daily.
