Can you use a pond filter in an aquarium ? I was wondering this recently because a fx5 looks like a big pond filter. What differences are there ?

FX5 - around 2700 L/H

My Pond Pump, 27,000 L/H

second washing machine?

Ok, I thought it would be sensible to have real life tests of the external filters we all use, and to have them all posted in one thread so it's easy for people (both members and guests) to find if they are wondering what the filters will be like for them. This started as being just All Pond Solutions filters, as some people have really positive reviews of them and some people have really negative ones. However, it's now being opened up to any brand of filter as the usefulness is not limited to the APS range.

Hi,

Hope you don't mind coldcazzie but I have entered the information provided in this thread into a spreadsheet, I believe it makes it easier to read.

We could do with alot more to give us a good idea of the performances of the various brands.

Hopefully, this will spur a few more people to flood their.. ermm.. test there filters.

I will be adding mine shortly.

As promised, here is mine. The results are exactly in line with the manufacturers user manual however in my opinion is still misleading as the name of the filter suggests 700 l/h and I do not remember seeing the modified hose and media in place specification on the box. Of course, a recommended tank size as others do.

Filter:
JBL CristalProfi e701

Maximum Pump Output
700 l/h without hoses and media.
350-400 l/h with 1.5m hose and supplied media in place.

Age at Testing
2 Months

Media, from the bottom up as that's the direction of water flow
Step 1: Coarse Pre-filter Foam.
Tray 1: Bio Noodles.
Tray 2: Sintered Glass Balls
Tray 3: 1 Coarse filter foam and 1 Finer filter foam.

Test Results: Real Life Output using the wide jet outlet pipe.
Before clean with inline heater in place: 288 l/h
After clean with inline heater in place: 360 l/h
After clean without inline heater in place: 400 l/h
