It's more realistic & believable that way!!

Go to a local lake/river & crop out a 6ft space in a photo & count the amount of different plants in that area. You'll find just 2or3!! It's very unnatural to have 20 different plants in a small space, thet's why his tanks always look so effective. George's tank is the same if you look, not too many different species. In most cases of any design (not just fish tanks) less is more!!
 
Pffff, he makes it look so easy in that step by step. :S I couldn't do that if my life depended on it.

I really like his tanks where a lot of light shines through the back. Beautiful.

WOW!! Those rock! And I REALLY like the one with the light coming from the back with all the cardinal tetras!! The back looks exactly like the sky and it gives the impression that the fish are just swimming through air. That's so nice!
