Ethos' Nano Diary

Seahorses are very hard to keep, there have been a few threads on them in Marine Chit Chat, check them out and it'll change your mind?

DD

Thats DD but I already know, I've read them......
I guess I want something different, not just regular clownfish or something.
Of course, that might be cool....
Anyways, The biggest thing I'd be worried about it their response to water changes? I mean, since its such a small tank.. Plus they're so expansive!
My LFS has a pai in for $90!

Right now, my LR seems to have shed lots of pecies of dirty kinda stuff.. I'm thinking about doing a water change, but I'm not quite sure yet. I have SW mix, but its a premesured little packet, so when I mix it, I need to mix it all at once. I was thinking of doing it in one of those home depot buckets? Would that work?

Sure.....I actually store some in a 5 gallon container between water changes. SH

How well/long does water stay?

Can store for several weeks if kept in a cool dark place in a good container. SH

Well I think that a Clownfish would be a good addtion. Then you can make the tank "FINDING NEMO" themed or something, but then you'll have to get a blue fishy and a Great White Shark that has an ausstralian accent, those maybe a little hard to find. :p

-Arrowhead :ninja:

Although ArrowHead, I don't really want a "Nemo" tank. I want something different, something interesting.
I was looking at seahorses, but they get about 6"-8" long, and need a deep tank.
So I'm back to not-so-exotic fish.
Does this look like a good skimmer? I was looking through their catolog, and was marking Ideas for christmas.
How come there's not on bulb in that catolog, or anywhere online, that'll fit a 20" hood? Its all 24"
Here's the skimmer, tell me if its worth the money.

Update on my tanks -
Alright, I've been having brown algae grow on the glass, and also alot more gressey stuff on the rock.
can I add snails yet?
An dI think I asked this but.....
Is it OK if you add the fish then coals?

if water stats are good enough then it would be safe to add your cleaning crew now.

as for the skimmer its the same one parker313 uses and it does a good job acording it her. it just diruptes the placement of your hood and takes some space in your tank. this is the one i use and works good.....if you want to spend that much on it: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod...8&N=2004+113771

as for fish how about a shrimp/gobby pair?

have a look here: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=15 and tell us what you like?

Yeah, thats where I've been getting my ideas - incase you didn't know that.
I'm looking for the cheapest vailable, which is the one I mentioned earlier, so thats the one I'm wondering about.
This is my "cart" or things I liked.
What do you think?

And those are just live things.
I'm thinking about getting one of those lazor lights....
+The skimmer

ALRIGHT, these are the fish/corals I've been thinking about....
Banded Possum Wrasse
Ocellaris Clownfish
Bulb Anemone
Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab
Dwarf Colored Feather Duster, White
Colony Polyp (Micronesia)

I'd still like to know what people thought about the skimmer

the minifloat is the same skimmer that parker313 uses and occording to her it works really well.

the wrasse should work.
the ocellaris works too.
i would stay far away from anemones with a 10 gal tank.
the hermits, feather dusters, and colony polyps work also.

some suggestions:

fish: red and purple firefish
true percula clowns
black and white clowns
clown gobby
neon gobby
gold neon gobby
a shrimp/gobby pair
Pygmy (Cherub) Angelfish
Fireball Angelfish
basslets
damsels
Pseudochromis/Dottyback

inverts/cleaning crew: scarlet and dwarf red tip hermits
cleaner shrimp
astraea snails
nassarious snails
turbo snails
margarita snails
cerith snails
feather dusters

for cleanning crew i would get a mix of animals that either eat algea, detris, and uneaten food. i have 1 cleaner shrimp, 3 hermits, 3 astraea snails, and 3 nassarious snails. also you will want one snail/hermit per gal so your cleaning crew should consist of about 10 animals.

corals: zoanthus(conlony polyps, supercolored polyps etc)
toadstool mushroom
speghetti figer coral
kenya tree coral
yellow fiji leather coral
mushrooms
ricordia

for right now i would get your cleaning crew and then wait about 2 weeks or so thenget the fish. this way you have time to decide what fish you want. i would only add one or 2 fish a week and no more than 2 larger fish and 1 small one total. ex: 1 ocellaris clown, 1 gobby/shrimp pair or 1 true perc, 1 neon gobby, 1 Banded Possum Wrasse or 1 gobby/shrimp pair, 1 pygmy angel fish or even mine and parker313's stock: 1 true perc 1 red/purple firefish and 1 yellow/green/black/brown clown gobby etc.

What about seahorses?
Hey Ethos, I know you don't like the HarMar, but they are selling black SeaHorses, relatively cheap there! I forgot the price, but I think they were cheap for seahorses.

Unless they're dwarf seahorses, my Nano can't have em.
Thanks though.

Have you thought about something like Zulu Lulu seahorses? That's what my wife is looking at... you can buy a mated pair from seahorse.com, and they're supposed to be perfect for something like a 10g.
