When I read this, a little light went on and I remembered a story I'd read about a mule giving birth - "scientifically confirmed".

That story doesn't give sources and doesn't even claim that it is fact. Mules can give birth but have only been proven to do so when an embryo is implanted into them. Its sort of like how they somehow mixed platies and guppies but it wouldn't happen naturally.

I have never heard of mixing species to give viable offspring. They must have been so closely related that they were (almost) basically the same species. In most cases mixes are a lot uglier than their parents though.
