Emergency..oscar Is Not Doing Well.....anyone Had This Problem?

Prime is a dechlorinator that can be used, at a higher dose, to temporarily detoxify ammonia.

What filtration is your mum running on the tank, and how (exactly) did you clean the filters?
Mom is running two filters for this 55 gal tank.

Yes; make and size?

I feel I ought to say here, that 55g isn't really big enough, even for one oscar

Hi, I am back. OK I understand that 55 gal isn't big enough. We had already talked about it through a fish shop expert.
Today we had two ammonia tested. One from my test; another we took to a fish expert. Both of them tested high in Ammonia. The expert looked at the pictures I took and said the ammonia killed the fish. We all agreed and in the forum too. Its my mother who wanted another opinion. We had to hurry home to change the water again to be sure the ammonia read 0 ppm. It did finally.
Tomorrow my mom will test it again to see what it reads. This way she can find which day to change the water if it gets high again.
Also she bought a bottle of an ammonia detoxified. The oscar seems to be better after the water change and is being active. One thing I noticed is the slime is coming off her body. Could it be her slime or the slime from the bacteria? I took more picture of her. Let hope I can get it posted.

Hi everyone,

I haven't been in here to finish what happens. My mom called and said she has to change water again as the ammonia went up again. mmmmm didn't I filled in the missing info the other day. . I came to find out that she killed all the good bacterias in the filtration system. Now she had to build up the good bacteria. I will be calling her in a few mins to get a better results. ok be back in a few......................................

when she added the salt to make up the difference after doing a water change, she said she could see the slime coming off the oscar. Why is it? Is that normal?

Excess slime coat production is just a symptom of the fish being sick.

Do you have a cycled filter you could donate some media from to put in your mum's filter? That would give her cycle a bump start.

Other than that, it's just water change, water change, water change...

she has an old cartridge filter that she took out so she can treat it with med. I'm not sure what you mean by it.
She does have another filtration system that she killed the bacteria.

do you mean that I can let her use my filter with good bacterias to put into her tank? Could it pass the parasites from hers back to mine. I don't have extra to lend as they are in my tanks cycling.
i have this in my tank for little fishies as you can see in the profile pic.

i don't understand what you say but i guest your fish's dead??? so sorry

We have no idea how the fish is doing; we have no reason to think it's dead

OP; those filters aren't going to be adequate for coping with an oscar. As the filters aren't cycled anyway, I would suggest your mum gets a decent sized canister filter. If you could give her some of the stuff from inside your filter to put in hers, it would help (no more than a third though, or your tank won't have enough bacteria). Replace anything you take out of your filter with some new media.

As your mum's tank isn't healthy, don't put the media back in your tank.

Hi there,

OK thanks for letting me know. Yes the one oscar had died a few days ago when its too late. We are concentrating on this last oscar. Named her Oscara.  She is still alive and yet still have some slime left and still doing water changes to reduce the ammonia. I have the old media from the koi tank that i can use to put in my moms fish tank to help build it up. Yesterday afternoon it show ammonia 0.50. My mom changed the water last night. This am mom changed it again with 50 percent water change. I have the old media filter from the koi that I can put in her fish tank filter. Of course I will not put it back to my tank as to not spread the diseases. I will replace my tank with a new filters.  I checked her an hour ago and she seems fine but have very little slime left. Her tank is getting a little milky and slimes floating around in the tank. she did take out the filters and the foam which I told her not to do as to let it build up good bacterias. She also took out the pin wheels. I am not sure why she did it. I guess as to what she said was in her way trying to move to top glass to get the hose in to drain it. Right now the plumber is working on her pipe to be fix. I will go up and help her fish tank again once the water is turn on and drain it.

any more advise?

although im having a hard time posting pics that i took a couple days ago. any idea.......need helps. Thanks

Also.........................my mom is thinking about finding someone to adopt Oscara. Anyone interested and would give her the best TLC. My mom is leaving to go to Florida in a couple months and cannot bring her. I could take her, but I have enough fish. If I could get my koi and goldfish to a TLC home and adopting too, I would take Oscara. Anyone?????
I am from Mass in the Berkshire County.

Maybe post something in the classified section or try to find a fishkeeping facebook group that is local to you.

Ok.....and first of all Good morning,

My mother called and said she still have slimes coming off Oscara after changing water and added salt to the tank last night. She did a 75 percent water change(about 6 inches water left in the tank) and added the salt to make up the difference. she tested the ammonia last night and its good. Its yellow like shown on the api test kit chart for freshwater-ammonia. Next,  today I will be up in a little while to test her tank once again to be sure this is correct. Shall I bring my old media(s) from the koi tank to put in her tank to build up good bacterias??????????? Thanks
