so i just decided to clean my new eheim 2213 out for the first time since ive had it. running down the middle of the impellor/magnet is a thin white plastic rod, that snapped pretty much as soon as i looked at it

the whole filter is built impeccably, and feels like it will last forever, except this bit made from crappy white brittle plastic. why is this not metal ? why skimp on this flimsy bit ?

its bank holiday weekend, im not going to be able to get the part for at least 3 days i reckon, and though ive put it back together and the filter is at least working, its making a massive din and im not going to get any sleep until i replace that part (tanks in my room).

is there any reason i cant DIY it with a metal rod as oppose to plastic ? not sure how it will effect the magnet, if at all.

edit - and ive just seen what they cost - 6 quid for a crap, thin, brittle toothpick with rubber cups on the end (that i dont need). have a word :grr:

Chances are good that the cheap plastic rod is ceramic, not plastic. Ceramics have good long term wear resistance. The tiny rubber ends are needed. Without them your impeller will not align properly and the impeller or its shaft will fail rather quickly.

It's ceramic and you have to be very careful with it - unfortunately it's a 'user error' that I've made myself. I think I bought the replacement part (including the rubber bushes) for about a fiver, I'll see if I can find it on ebay for you.

Yes, it's ceramic and definately very delicate. It has to be that way - it's the only thing that would hold up under the friction and keep working as long as it does. When I get close to that ceramic part all my attention goes into focus and I concentrate on not breaking it. I also keep a replacement kit (as said the replacement comes with both the ceramic part and two replacement silicon/rubber end-caps) handy so that in the event I do break it my bacteria will not be in jeopardy from not having a working filter!
