Unsure about the humming noise, all of mine have only ever been silent. :/

The Bio-balls don't have a sponge on top, so be careful as one or two may drop down the hole.

Have a play with the media, see which works best for you. Mine is just setup how it comes. :good:

Minnt, were yours silent from the get go? I've always found externals to be silghtly noisier when they first start up or after a big clean out, but they settle down after 24 hours to their 'normal operating' noise levels.

Just set up my 2213 again and it was loads noiser than I remembered but settled down to silent again with 5 hours. The 2215 has a noise issue which I'm sure is down to a failing impeller as I've stripped it and tried running it with no media and get the same noise levels (still waiting for it to be delivered to the shop 4weeks after asking them to order it).

The noise you have in the vid sounds the same from my dads 2000 APS filter, I find that after a few mins I tune it out.

Were the sponges dry? if so try squeezing them in tank water(and the filter floss in dechlor water) to get rid of any air pockets deep inside which would otherwise take ages to come out on their own.

it'll get left now until i order some purigen and it turns up, that stuff sounds like magic dust.

if i give the filter a nudge, i get air bubbles come from the outlet. im thinking this means theres unwanted air in the filter, as obviously its not sucking air in anywhere, so any air coming out is already still in the filter ? when i was taking the filter apart earlier to 're-prime' it, i found a ball in the tube. cant work out how it got there though. was hoping that was the source of my rattle, appears not.

but, the air i can nudge out, is that my problem ? its far from silent at the moment. when you say silent, do you literally mean the only way you know its on because you see water moving in the tank ? i can hear mine from a good 10 feet away, not good as i only sleep 5 feet from it. its not in a cabinet.

Yep, silent more or less straight away.

If you are still getting air come out then shake/rock the filter vigourously until they subside. There may be an air pocket around the propellor.

Just give it another vigorous shake, and i got a few drips of water.coming from underneath the handle/ clamps. No amount of shaking seems to get rid of the air, could this water be dripping from a leaky seal and sucking air in, and im fighting a never ending battle? It sounds even worse now hahaha. it only leaks after being shaken, not while its just sitting there, so i probably wont worry about it as the problem.

Considering the leak points, would the big o ring be the culprit? I cant visualise it in my head
