i am hunting for an external filter and came accross this, it will fit my cabinet and sounds great and for less than £49 delivered with free media its a good deal. has anyone got one? is it any good? any problems?

thanks, Matt

I dont have one myself but can vouch for Eheims in general, although I have heard bad things about the Ecco range, but hear good things about the Classic range. Is it new or used?

The 2213 is not the best they have done, getting the thing running is the hardest part.

How ever that apart their good filters

i hated mine, i could never get it primed, not could i get the lid off due to the suction created! I had to take it outside and release the water before i stood a chance. Also, the metal clips that hold the lid on are weak, and one of mine fell off.
i would get another model or a fluval 05 series

Some will say the same about the model i have advised, but IME they are great. other eheims will be good from what i have heard thoiugh

Do any of the problems mentioned above apply to the 2215 at all?

Yes much the same

the problem with suction is easily fixed though by opening the taps once disconected

The 2213 is one of the smaller Eheim Classics. This is the design they have been producing for years, a no frills workhorse that will run forever with little maintenance.

No frills means no self prime, no media baskets, and you often have to purchase the double taps as an add on. Run forever means 20+ years, with an occasional impeller/shaft replacement. Little maintenance means on the appropriately sized & stocked tank for the filter you only need to pay attention to it a few times a year, but you can clean it out more often if you are bored.

the price is for a new one.

what do you mean by the hardest thing is getting them running? this is my first external so am a little unsure on them

you have to suck the water over the side of the tank to get the syphone running which will fill the pump once this is done it will work but it can be tricky some times

As said apart from the difficulty with priming it is a great filter that will outlive pretty much all other brands. In the past I have had the 2213 and now have a 2217.

To overcome the priming issue you can easily attach the inflow pipe to a small powerhead (or even an internal filter that has a similar diameter outlet), and then pump the water through the external until all of the air has been removed.

Yes the eheim classics are very reliable filters but lack the little extras that make external filters easier to use.

With an external filter, the water that comes out of your tank towards the filter is drawn from the tank by means of a syphoning action and is pumped back to the tank via the filters motor, hence the older models such as the classics dont have an self prime function so you will have to start the syphoning action yourself by sucking on the inlet pipe to get the water flowing from the tank into the filter, its not really a big deal but just something thats a little annoying when you compare it to some of the newer filter available on the market today.

If you looking at getting a classic, I'd pay the bit extra and get the 2217+ which would provide you with plenty of filtration and a good turnover which will in turn give you more stocking options.

just been checking out the 2215+ and its about the same price as a pro, which is best?

I have an Eheim 2217, in my opinion it is a great filter; yes it's "no frills" but this leaves little to go wrong with it. It holds large amounts of media, has a fair flow rate and as said doesn't need a huge amount of maintenace.

The only problem with it is the priming, but it's not the end of the world.

I like my pro, few pumps of the prime button and job done, no sucking on pipes required, simples!
