ok so i've just got a dead fish out the tank and decided i should check the others. one of my platies has definately got dropsy. poor things slow and all his bodies all spiky. i cant bring myself to kill him so will get other half to do it.

what i want to know, is it contageous?

I'm moving soon and dont wanna stress already ill fish out. will the others all have it?

they were fine yesterday when i changed the water. should i panic?

Dropsy is a condition caused by anything..poor water quality, internal parasites, organ failure (in my case from overfeeding)...SO...depending on the cause it may be contagious. Did you notice anything else unusual before noticing the dropsy symptoms? How did the other dead fish die?

Sorry to hear about your platy.

Bye bye fishie :byebye:

unsure. they were all fine yesterday when i changed the water and then this morning not ok. all my other fish are ok.

i rushed to lfs this morning who tell me i can treat internal parasites though i dont hold much hope cos my poor guy has pop eye too. hes swimming and has eaten though so you never know.

other fish showed no symptoms of anything when i fished her out. no pinecone effect, no swollen belly nothing so we're treating for parasites as it's likely. think i may have pinned cause down to filter stopping last week and then possibly not dechlorinating water yesterday.

keep fingers crossed

Dropsy is incurable once it has progressed, popeye is closely related to dropsey so keep an eye on them, also some say that dropsy isn't contagious, can you post test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph.

see this is what i thought but was told otherwise by my lfs. all my parameters are normal.

i've added aquarium salt today in an attempt to help it. do i add it every time i change the water?

should i just put my poor fish out of his misery?

Yes add the salt back when you do a water change, good luck.

decidee only hymane thing to do is to put the poor thing out of it's misery. he is swimming but he looks so ill. i've not been able to look at him all afternoon.
sent other half to do the deed as i cant.

:( :(

I'm sorry.

damn fish's swum off now. obviously doesn't wanna be caught

Mine do that look at deaths door, but they no when you want to remove them.

thing is, he does eat and he does swim. he just looks so bad.

dont know what to do for the best

If the scales are sticking out like a pinecomb, i'm sorry to say that's it, it's the last stage of dropsy.

problem being my lfs did say it could be cured with this stuff. i did say he looked like a pine cone and that i thought it wasn't treatable and was told that it was and they gave me this stuff.

dropsy is uncurable uless you catch it in the early stages, some lfs will tell you anything to sell a product, you can give it a try it's your choice, but it's best to medicate in a hospital tank so you are not harming the bateria colony in your filter and the other healthy fish.

how can you cure it when it's organ failure some lfs I don't no.
