vix my advice would be to do a search on dropsy in this forum, see if you can pull anythin up.

as far as i know dropsy means death.. but i dont know everythin.. neither does wilder... please do a search to find out more about it.

if that fails ring lfs's to see if they can recomend anythin. :/

I have heard members use small amounts of salt on cories, been told tons of times that house hold salt is fine to use and i have and not had no ill effects of using it.

Dropsy is not contagious, but I would do a water change once the fish passes away, sorry.

hi ill quote from the catfish cradle, wish is on this forum

Some people have asked about salt with cory's, they are fresh water tropical fish, they do not have salt in thier natural habitat, so therefore do not add salt to the tank. If you have a problem with the fish in the tank and wish to use salt then please put hte infected fish in a new tank and use salt! Do not use salt in tanks with fish, plecs, cory's and other catfish that never have the need for salt.

This may seema little harsh to read but it seems more people are adding salt and then asking, always ask someone or look for help before dosing a tank with meds or salt because the fish you got are brackish or salt water types.

Saves a lot stress froms mods and other members who agree that slat is bad for them, and therefore will not explode the topic!

Many thanxs for reading, and thanxs for taking note.

Please note !
We never intenionaly mean to hurt or offend anyone with this info, it is meant only as a guide form those who have kept those fish for many years.

That's fine you will always get conflicting information in the hobby, some say yes some say no it's down to experience in the end.

no no no more like 'its down to testing in the end'

im sorry but i wouldnt risk my catfish or for that fact any fish just for the 1

Can you issolate the fish, give her a shelled pea.

To be honest with the fish being in a bad way I would risk it either.

If she's got last stage dropsy than she most likely will die. Usually if they're pineconing it means that they're all bloated (from their head to midway their body they're really really FAT) with all kinds of fluids inside and can't swim properly (sideways, upside down, really fast and then pause, head up or down depending on the fish). Also I've been told that dropsy is contangious because the fluids that seep out of the fish can come in contact with the other fish. Then again, I've also heard that dropsy is most likely genetic and doesn't affect most fish. But yeah it might be better to take precautions just in case.

Oh and on the salt, probably better to use aquarium salt when you give the bath.

Edited to add:
Just curious but how will the pea help? When my fish had dropsy, they stopped eating for 2 weeks before

i cnat believe it.. thanks guys :( :-( i only go her on sunday! is it possible that the other balloon mollie has it too since it came from the same batch?

just read what u guys said...

she was swimming funny last night but now shes found her balance. She is isolated but if the fluid seeping thing is true then... well it will get to the others.

Should i give her a salt bath and see how she goes then?

im still confused bout the pea thing... she wont eat

I think the salt bath is a good idea, it wouldn't hurt anyway. When you bought her was she already bloated/pineconing??

Yeah I don't know what the pea is for. Unless all it is is bloated, but if she's got her scales sticking out like a pine (ooh everytime I think of it it gives me the creeps :/ ) then its dropsy. If she was just bloated it would most likely mean she's constipated and usually a pea will help things move out.

Edited to add:
Constipation has also been known to make the fishy swim weird or swim bladder disorder which makes it also swim funny cause all the food pushes down on the swim bladder and it cant keep it's balance.

It usually is tablespoon per gallon, that 5litres.
