is there a specific type of REAL rock that you can drill a hole through without cracking the rock? id imagine there are some that will simply split with that much pressure being applied.

a small core drill will do the trick on any rock. you need quite abeefy drill though.

but granet, though this is very hard, most green slate, with a decent thickness, will take a hammer drill. any rock that is taken from the sea, lol cant think a hammer drill will bash as hard as the sea will, damp sand makes a good shockproofing vice, you need a big pile though.

A few(i mean a lot)of masonary bits, a drill press and water for lubing the bit, and many hours of light drilling should do it.

Slate drills pretty easily, I put holes in it with a regular drill & masonary bit, then screw it to driftwood.

if you can get some diamond tipped drill bits, they aint cheap but they will work alot better against the rock :)

Dont forget to lube and cool the bit as much as possible as you go - it'll get pretty hot !

You can use a masonry bit on any rock, as long as you use the right speed it should be ok. If it gets hot, try putting some 3 in one oil in the hole then continue drilling.

If its taking ages to get through, use the hammer drill function on the drill....
