You can definitely breed your own egg to try and get a neglected. I've never tried it myself but it's definitely an option. I've just never used an egg I bred myself because I heard that bred eggs act funny. Not sure what that means. I'm guessing that this means they need more views to hatch than CB eggs or eggs from the AP.
Let me see if I can help... You're better off using an egg you breed or an egg from the cave and not moving them off your scroll at any point. Which means they will be on there 7 days (unless you incubate and make it 6 days). If you get an egg from the AP that's over 4 days you can incubate it. If it's less than that you cannot. Of course if it's less than 3 days you can no longer incubate and will be forced to either earthquake your egg or force it (meaning you try to kill the egg with the hopes that it will be forced to hatch instead).
The reason I keep mentioning incubating is because it will add a day. Let me explain. Like my neglected dragon was a waterhorse egg that I picked up from the cave. I incubated it too. When it turned neglected I abandoned the egg and one of my friends was waiting to catch it. When she caught it it had 2 days. 1 day for being CB and not leaving my scroll and the other because I incubated. So incubating will add a day.
Anyways. If you pick up an egg from the cave or breed one you'll want to note the time you picked it up. When an egg hits 0 hours it has 30 mins left, an egg with 1 hour left has an hour and 30 mins left and so on. You should keep your egg fogged until about 40 mins to death. At 40 mins to death I quickly unfog mine and put it in a few ERs (usually bigger ones like Dragonnery, Silvi's, etc..) and quickly refog it back. At 8 mins or so to death I unfog the egg. It'll start getting views. It's good to remember that views and UVs rise at a rate of 1 UV to 15 views. So if you have only 1 UV your egg will not rise past 15 views until you get more UVs. Now you should just watch your egg. Make sure it's steadily rising in views. If it stops you should put it in an ER or few. Your egg shouldn't start cracking until 2 mins until death really. When it starts cracking you want it to be slow but steady. You don't want it on the last cracking stage at 1 min left because it'll likely just hatch. So if it's cracking too fast then just fog it for 20 seconds or so. If your egg turns you have basically 3 options: abandon it if it's going to gain time (you'll need a friend to catch it), earthquake it or force it. Abandoning is a lot better obviously.

Oh and set up! I have a few tabs open when I do mine. I have the page to my scroll, another tab with the abandon page or earthquake (depending on what I'm going to try) and the ERs I will use. It's also a good idea to hide the adults on your scroll when doing a ND experiment.
I can't think of anything else but if anyone has a question feel free to ask! Trying to get NDs is hard. I haven't tried again in like 2 months. It's such a letdown to keep trying and failing.
