Yep a Saltwater test kit isnt any good if your testing a Freshwater. So just like Ace, is your tank a Marine or Freshwater?

Usually saltwater and freshwater test kits are interchangeable. They are still testing for the same substances, so it makes no sense that it wouldnt work. Your test kits should come with 2 cards, fresh and saltwater. Just use the appropriate card for your type of water. Your tank shouldnt have fish in it yet, but seeing you already do, just dont add anymore until your ammonia goes down to 0. Either way, if the ammonia test was yellow, its a good sign because that should mean 0(assuming you have the api kit).

He has had is tank for 2 years, why shouldnt there be fish in there?

Hes got a bit of ammonia, which is kinda weird. I didnt see the 2 years part though I assumed he was doing a cycle.

Im very curious ont he stocking. What size tank is this? I would assume that this person has a severly over stocked tank, resulting in high Ammonia Reading.
