do we really NEED another reason...

it may sound harsh, or cruel, but i don't have any feelings towards the food i eat. i never seen it alive....and didn't see it die....so therefor i don't have any feelings towards it's already gone life. the point to me is that it's dead, and it's keeping me alive. it's nature to eat meat. is it cruel when a tiger slowly kills it's food? it sure is torture. but it's nature....just a foodchain thing. we are somewhere on the top of the food chain....and thats where i plan on staying.

i think that if someone wants to be a vegitarian, then thats good for them. i don't think they should try to make everyone see things the same way they do.

soy-beans would end up non-existent if thats all every human in the world ate.....ain't enough to feed the world.

:flex: tofu is tasty :p and all it tortures are beans!
This is one thing I hate. Such a high value on animal life, and a total disregard for plant life. Just because you can't hear the beans screaming doesn't mean they want you to eat their babies.

Also, too much tofu can be bad news. It contains phytoestrogens, a compound that produces reactions in the human body similar to those produced by estrogen. Good for menopausal women, not as good for those of us still producing our own, or for men. This is not to say that soy isn't healthy in moderate quantities, but too much of anything can be bad for you. New studies are also investigating the relationship between the use of soy based formula in infants and ADD later in the childs development.

It's perfectly good food, in reasonable amounts. Perhaps not for young kids, but moderation is truly the key. I don't have a problem with soy products, I just don't like seeing them touted as a "miracle product"

Exactly, plants are alive :( Then again, so were tables and chairs..
i bet theres a majority of people out there being tree-huggers hoping that one day we all give in and stop using plants!

why can't people let life be just the way it is........if one person doesn't like the way someone else does something they gotta start a riot.....this world is gone nuts  :S

I know its already been pointed out but every petco is different. The healthiest fish I've gotten have come from petco. I agree that there prices on supplies are daft though. A penguin 125 is like 32.99 in the store (not sure about petco online) and I got it off of big als for 14.99 (they had a sale). But yeah I buy all my fish from there now because the one lfs closest to me has uber overstocked tanks and of course theres wal mart. No explanation needed there. Then theres a lps thats a little bit farther away but the fact they use ugf on a 10 gal tank with 6-10 african cichlids makes me wonder. They also have no selection. They have like 6 bettas if you're lucky and no corys or otos :/ So petco is my best bet.

haha this thread is getting very off subject. It's very fun reading all of these debates though! Very educating

well steppy-if we let everything be the way it is and nothing ever changed, we wouldnt progress as a society. women would not be albe to vote. black people would still be slaves and there would be no other minorities in the US. back then, everyone said what you just said. "why cant we just leave things the way they are? why do these women protest-they should just accept that they are inferior to men. black people should just shut up and do what theyre told." steppy-if youre so opposed to change that would probably make you a racist and woman-basher in the old days. but im sure thats not true now. do you see how irrational your statement was? everyone is usually opposed to change at first but then they realize its for the better. you cant just sit around and watch bad things happen. "the only thing necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing."

cation-actually my uncle has high prostrate levels and the docotr recommended he cut milk out and drink soymilk everday instead. imo, there is no such thing as add. its called "not paying attention"-i was rather guilty of it when i was little but no one ever told me it was a "disease" and that i had to take a pill for it. i just got slapped when my mind wandered. come on!

its not cruel for animals to eat other animals because thats nature. we have so many other options that we dont have to but if carnivorous animals dont eat meat, they will die. if we dont eat meat, we will live longer. i believe we are meant to eat fish and no other meat but i wouldnt eat a fish anyways. to me there is no difference between my pet fish and a fish filet at mcdonalds. its really close minded and immature to be anti-something if you havent even tried it steppy. i fear for your future children and their unhealthy lives. maybe you will be more open-minded as you get older.
wrs-you would most likely develop some form of malnutrition if you didnt eat vegetables. i know you eat some vegetables. there is no such thing as someone who cant eat any kind of vegetables. maybe you throw up because of the salad DRESSING?

and the only reason why i am a vegetarian is because i hate plants...i like to hear the crunch of celery between my teeth so i know im ripping it to shreds and torturing it. and i enjoy my wood furniture. i spit upon trees! trees are the enemy!

Well, as a biologist, I'm more likely to trust the research then "your opinion". Nothing personal. Everybody has one.

OK back on topic...

I agree with jac about PetCo.

NOT ALL PETCOS ARE BAD

but just because they may have well trained employees
Other employees at other stores aren't and because PETCO is a franchise, no matter what store you buy from they still make money off of it.
Say there's 2 petcos and one is awful and the other has great employees and you don't buy a $10.00 item at the bad one and buy it at the"good" one The petco Franchise still makes the money it would've if you bought at the "Bad" one.

So even if you don't buy at the bad one PetCo still makes the profit.

And see if you still want to support this franchise

Hey!!!! It just dawned on me while reading the first line of MD's link....Petco scarred my rabbit! Of course I was aware of this beforehand but I didn't add it up with this thread until just now.

It was way back when we first got Rabbie, the first day. I brought him home and he scratched Tuesday (accidently of course!) so I brought him to Petco to have his nails trimmed because he was so tiny, I was scared to do it. The chick made one of his toes bleed and put corn starch on it. 6 months later I noticed one of his toes (while I was cutting them!) is growing funny, the pink tender area has grown to the tip and it looks weird and possibly like it will cause us future problems. It's the same toe that *choice word inserted here* clipped wrong!

So...how does one person change the world? I don't say that with sarcasm by any means. I've been fighting a year long battle with Wal-Mart and I grew tired of it about a month or two ago. I've tried endlessly to at least get them to care for their tanks and for the bettas. Change their water for crying out loud. I seriously believe (and from what my eyes have seen can almost certainly say is true) that they get the bettas in and immediately display them. There they sit without water changes or food until they are either sold or die, then they are merely replaced. :(

After my last public outburst,I boycotted the store and stormed out in front of the manager. I was so very pissed that I found MORE dead/dying bettas after I was JUST in there the previous week complaining (which takes a good 30 minutes!) They know who I am when they see me, they know what I'm there for...yet they refuse to change a damn thing.

I didn't go in for almost 2 months, until last week. My lfs was closed on Sunday and I HAD to get some dechlorinator so I ran in for a tiny bottle. The bettas were a filthy mess in their tiny cups, I was in a hurry. I got to the lawn and garden check out and the cashier remembered me (I was so mad that day I made myself memorable). She said "Hey, remember that thing with the fish?' and I just shot her a look and said "I remember, I wouldn't be in here right now if it wasn't an emergency."
And she said the manager replaced that departments staff and emptied all the tanks and started over. I cringed and said "I hope he didn't crash the tanks  ....but I just saw the bettas and they looked like crap!"

So today it was raining and I really, really had to do some grocery shopping. I decided I'd go to Wal-Mart (much to the amazement of my daughter who kept saying "don't you hate walmart, mom?") The tanks looked good. But the bettas looked terrible. The department manager was over in an aisle stocking dog food, I just stood there for a minute and walked away. I've dealt with him before and I know it will just fall on deaf ears so screw it. I hate that it's beaten me down like this, I didn't want to change the world, I just wanted to change one store :/

I've tried calling local authorities, talking to animal organizations, I just get transferred here and there, then a voicemail and bleh..

Pardon my ramble but maybe you can give me some advice on the matter. It's easy for all of us to sit at our computers and say what's bad but HOW do we change it, how do you make people care?
