So in regards to preparing to plant my bettas 2 gal hex tank, i figured i needed a new filter, and extrenal one too, and i didnt want ot spend much money either,
and i didnt want ot spend $15+ on a HOB, so i decided a mini DIY canister was an option, and it would probably be efficient as well.
My 2g hex is currently fitlered iwth a elite stingray 5 that IMO takes up way too much room in the tank.
My reason for planitng is, on my current tank, my betta is always restingon my silk plants, so iwant to decently plant it and maximize room, as for the input i have no idea what to use as a strainer...
for output im probably goign to wire in a ugf and make an RUGF, i plan to get some more natural looking substrate, and then get a nice piece of driftwood, and as for plants i will only be using Java moss and Java fern, however finding im not sure where to locate java moss,
i was wondering , whaat size container would be best for a 2 gallon sump running on a 38gph pump(that of the elite stingray, i have tubes that fitted on to it, i tested it by using it it to perform a wc yesterday, as for wiring hte power cord, i found out an idea,
all i need now is to saw up the lid a bit, or unhinge the lighting unit , asi have no use for it, and find some plexi glasss to cover it. Some suction cups to keep the intake in place.
and some bio media, what do you reccomend?
im going to draw up a diagram later of what i plan.
Planing to upgrade to a 2.5 seeing as anythign bigger my parents may complain.
This will allow for more room on my part, and allowing me to easily create a better aquascape.
Also heres the sketch i just drew up

you will more likely than not find as I did that its nearly impossible to get anything like this to work as well as in theory without years of practice fine tuning and general bodgery but if you have your heart set on this method you will have to consider that plants need CO2 and that you will be outgassing it at an extreme rate minimising co2 available for plants also that you tank is tiny and 38gph is an extremely high turnover rate and may cause excessive turbulence and or over-filtering.
hope this helps, gareth

i do have a 10 gallon in my closet i might eventually set up, well, this is hte filter still running right now, so instead its going to be turned into a RUGF, so probably a piece of drift wood, with a few rocks behind it with java fern tied to them, and on the wood, and as a carpet some java moss. and i found a lighting unit my cousin has im probably wondering if i could use, and DIY into a a box type thing which ill probably make W- 12 inches, hieght 15 inches, and L as 22 inches, so i can fit my 2 gal into there for the time being, im rigging in a good amount of lights in there, and when the tme comes i can easily slide my 10g in there..
