Disgusted With P@h

I'm starting to think my LFS isn't so bad now

My brother warned me off the one i used to use some 10 years ago saying it is rubbish these days. I was there last Sat and yes it was looking a bit dirty but every tank was spotless and every fish looked perfect. I think i'll stick to the shop i know from now on

Ha I had the opposite of that. When I first got back into the idea of fish everyone I know who used to keep fish said to me "go to the shop in Seaside, they're brilliant blah blah". I eventually went to check them out in April/May (whilst my tank was cycling). Well I tell you what, they were the worst I've seen including my local P@H (who aren't that bad). There was dead fish in most of the tanks, ill looking fish in all of them, clamped fins - the lot.

Yet still I have people recommend them to me. It baffles me.

P@H are dependant on the management. You have good bad and Lazy.

I have Applied to work in the stores here in Coventry countless times, but I always see people in there who have no business selling/catching let alone advising on fish. They finally got the reptile licence back after it was withdrawn for Cruelty reasons.
I once spoke to one of their Experts from another store, and left with no real aspirations for improvements to be made.

my local p@h is very good. whenever I have been in there the tanks are always clean and they are constantly seem to be cleaning the tanks. I think its down to the individual branch and if the people there can be bothered, as I say though my local branch is very good. its just like LFS some are good and some are bad, its mainly down to the staff that make it good or bad.

I know this topic has died down now but I haven't been active over the past couple of days so have missed chance to join the discussion.

When will people stop judging how good a fish store is by the number of dead fish in the tanks?

I mean it's just not relevent. A specialist fish store, which are much quieter than P@H on average has chance to remove a deceased fish probably within half an hour of its passing. As opposed to P@H that have many other things to do, IE selling small animals and reptiles and giving advice on other things.

Plus fish don't come in perfect condition from suppliers y'know? You may find diseased fish come from JMC for example?

If you want to base it knowledge, fine. But nowhere does it say Pets at Home employee's need to be experts on selling fish, and until a law is introduced about fish wellbeing and sale the liklihood is not much will change.

Pets at Home threads should be banned from the forum, they happen a couple of times a month and lead exactly to the same place... Nowhere

If you don't like, don't go. You know I went to KFC last week and got warmish chips, much to my disgust. I now go to Mcdonalds... See?

James.

Pretty much this ^^

Though I feel a name and shame is sometimes relevant, though without branding chain stores, as each department will differ.

I.e for example, Leekes fish section in Crosshands, Wales, is appalling. But i'm sure other stores are very good.

Actually you can judge a place on how many dead fish in the tanks - when they're decomposing and have obviously been there more than a day.

How true! :good:

Obviously towards the end of the thread now and I do agree that Pets at Home get a lot of mention on here and some may become exasperated toward this.

However, some people cannot shut off the frustration of walking in to a place that is supposed to be professional and seeing bad conditions/lots of dead fish etc. It does play on your mind and as much as whining about it wont change it, sometimes it just helps to vent until you've realised that not much can be done, apart from making the decision to steer clear. I know some would prefer these threads to be banned or not allowed, but you know, at times these types of threads remind me that some humans retain a bit of compassion and are still affected by seeing suffering rather than become immune to it and think 'oh well'

Now, I'm not implying that the ones that are fed up with these threads have no compassion, and im certainly not saying that writing on a forum about ones experience over and over again will change the course of action for some, however, if we are not allowed to express our frustrations in an appropriate manner on a site dedicated to fish keeping then what are we to do.

Tbh, there are more annoying threads out there and I can think of many.

Ive given up on all of my LFS inc P@H. I buy all my fish from private breeders and suppliers, they have always been good quality and Ive not had a single one die.
I agree with you. Get all mine from small private breeders and people selling unwanted fish .I never had any problems with ich or other disesses and I don't even quarantine new arrival - stouch wood!
