Happy New Year everyone.
Despite researching I can't seem to find out why discus are so difficult to keep. If it's a matter of water quality then that's no problem as I'm willing to put time and effort in. Can any experts help please? :dunno:

if you give them good water quality then they will give you an enjoyable aquarium keeping time

Daveo :D

Thanks Daveo, are they ok in a hexagonal tank, say 30g?

Generally it is water quality Discus are very sensitive to nitrogenous waste. Yes you can put a few discus in a 30gal hex.

They are not difficult to keep. If you have test kits/ro water the works. People say they are because they dont know about this stuff and thee discus has died.

A 30g is no where near big enough for discus and with hexagonal tanks generally being tall this is even worse as it has a very small footprint.
I would suggest that discus are not kept in anything smaller than a 36x18x18" (40g).

hmmm, 30 gal just wouldnt do

to keep then really happy and for a newbie at discus i would put a group of maybe 5 or 6 in a 55 gal minimum. they would look best with plants aswell, maybe a school of cardinals and other tetras

Good Posting CFC, that is very true a 30g hex is not the ideal tank for Discus at all and also if you want them to be even more healthy and happy keep them in a group of no less than 6.

Ok thanks. Howabout a 45g rectangular. Could I keep about 5?

Maybe four Maybe 5 if there wasn't anything else in there. As a general rule of thumb. 1 discus for every 10gal. So you could(put I would go with 4 to provide extra space)...wait, what are the dimensions of the tank(just wondering  )

There is no need for R/O water unless glolite plans on breeding.

Discus are not at all difficult to keep. With the right water conditions, food, and water changes you can easily raise healthy discus. They are not difficult to keep but they are time consuming. I have 6 2.5-4" discus in a 72g (more will be added soon) and i do daily 50% water changes(w/c's). I also feed them 4x's a day (Tetra Color bits, Tetramin Flakes, Frozen brine shrimp, frozen blood worms, and beef heart.) 1 of the most important things to worry about is water conditions. Ph must always be stable it is better to acclimate ur discus to a ph of 7.0 then to try to swing back and forth when trying to keep a ph of 6.5 or w/e. my discus are kept at a ph of 7.2 and the temp is 86 f. It is best to keep juvenile discus in a bare bottom tank for the ease of cleaning. Discus luv clean water and juveniles grow fast when kept at the right conditions and fed the right things. Good luck, HTH.

Water Quality is true represent prima facie factor in looking after diskus, matter which your need pay attention to entire/all content which is there are in water ( pH,dH,temp, dissolve oxygen, iron content, obstetrical of mud, nitrit/nitrate,chloride and obstetrical other;dissimilar) and for that you need appliance or if there is laboratory which can assist you know that matter, and pay attention to your tap water which you use for keep discus, whether/what water quality always remain to and stabilize or sometimes change.
After water all right. :)
We see how quality from discus which you buy, how quality and amount from food which you give. Afterwards we see how to changing water and amount of replacement water (at least 50% from capacity a day) and filtrate system and lighting power(should be dim) and type of tank you plan for (plant tank or community tank with another fish species or with other discus) and dimension of tank.
using drugs for discus.
Oftentimes we give drug which is disagree with its disease, by the reason of manner and stock limitation medicinize for the fish, hence that disease will be immanent and cannot heal. Even now exist drugs for fish capable to healing a lot of disease. Beware to drug which is like this B) .
Always use correct drug and the real correct dose.So... like this, hence look after discus will become easy to, even very easy.
Have a nice discus time.....Bye :D
