Michigan. ugh.
i've been trying to figure out the tank size a discus would need, and find many different answer's.
so i was hoping ya'll might know what size a discus would need, because im looking into getting one, but not if my tank's not big enough.

thanks so much!

Discus are nervous fish, which do better in a small group with other discus. A minimum group of 4-5 discus do well in at least a 55 gallon tank (48"x13"x20").

The minimum size for a breeding pair would be 29 US gallons (30"x12"x18"). This is confirmed breeding pair, where both have paired, spawned and may have produced eggs.

Sounds good advice, always go for the deeper size rather than standard tank sizes, cardinals make good tank mates and get corrys to help keep the bottom clean of un-eaten food (but get the species that tolerate the warmer water).

Pretty thx for posting this ^^ I've been looking for the same answer and nobody helped me  but they did you :D 4-5 discus in a 55gallon tank good to know :D think that I could get 4 angles in with them too?

EDIT---> sorry to kind of steal your thread

Hi have a 60g (40x18x18) with 4 discus and 20 neons, but it is a fairly new setup, but i will be having 6 discus and 40 neons and 6 cories in there, it is also a planted tank.

Hi mine is 48x15x18, i have 5 discus,3 corydoras,2 rams and 25 cardinals, I would also like angels but my tank already has the maximum that it can cope with. Some people do keep angels with their discus but it is not recomended (not 100% sure why, i`m sure someone with more experience will know) .
Also lots of water changes and a very good filter is needed for this amount of fish. The bigger the tank the better. I have only had mine for couple of months but they are beautiful fish, well worth it.

I set up my discus tank about 14 months ago and it is doing awesome. I keep 4 discus as well as a small school of neons and rummy nose. I have a few corys to clean the bottom, and 2 siamensis to eat algae if any pops up. I wish I would've set up a 125 gallon! My recommendation is, GO BIG! The smallest I would recommend is a 55 gallon. You won't regret setting up a discus tank.

I have a 75 gallon that is heavily planted with amazon swords and a few other plants, as well as driftwood. For the substrate, I use scentless kitty litter as the bottom layer (its made out of clay, which has some natural nutrients for the plants... at least thats what I was told...?), the middle layer is about 1/2 inch of sand, and the top layer is about 3/4 inch of fine gravel. I use a Fluval 304 filter, and at night I turn on a bio-wheel mini to bring surface tension to the water. The PH stays very stable at about 6.6 - 6.8, because I put peat moss in the Fluval. The temperature is kept at 84 degrees F. I'm very happy with the tank. I was nervous when I first set it up because discus are sensitive/delicate fish and I didn't know if I had enough time to tend to it. But after a few weeks of making sure the water quality was stable, I don't really have to do anything except do a 30% water change twice a week and feed them.

wild discus have parasites. which angels cannot live with even though there from the same river (diff parts). now as discus are tnak bred then sold the parasites have gone i have 4 baby angels with my 7 discus and there fine all my discus are about 3" and angels about 1-2" and when from young no aggression shown just try not to get a breeding pair!

IMHO keeping Angels with Discus is a recipe for distaster. I found the Angels fed too quick and bullied the discus around. If you do want to try it make sure you have another tank available to house the Angels if required.

Thanks discusAngel, i wondered why. Your tank looks really good and the Angels do look good with the discus. What size is your tank?
Angel

Thanks, them 2 angels were rehomed i wasnted to start again! i now have 4 baby angels. if you introduce discus 1st you will have no toruble angels 1st could make a little trouble in the region of Hogging food etc. as i added these babys the discus almost "Own" there tank they feed 1st and the angels wait till food sinks half way then eat.

my tank is 40 gal and my angels are the size of a 10p and my discus are all 3" and the pic is an old one...

o yeh just another pointer people say get "Dither fish" people sometimes get the wrong meaning of "Dither" it means fast quick and hyperactive small fish. dont get these with your discus i was advised to and they took over my tank and the discus got scared so they were rehomed immdietly. but corys are great with discus also very fun to watch.

hope all the info helps good luck with your tank!
