My sister has discovered Discus fish and loves them. She has a 125 litre tank with one gourami and a few guppys and 6 cardinal tetra. Is having Discus in there possible with what she has and the size of the tank?

Also what kind of special care do they need? thanks

a 125l is too small for them, or i'd have them in mine :hyper:

think they require a minimum tank size of 5-6ft? and a minimum group of 6. when young they require a lot of work to get them growing well

oh right, not for her then. I'll tell her, she asked me to find out.

Yeah unfortunately too small. A four foot 250L would be minimum I would say

Well, the upgrade from a 125 litre to a say 240+ litre space wise (meaning space for the set up) isnt that much really, obviously only if you have the extra space to do this, and you could find a set up that big on ebay for 150ish most likely. Deffo worth the investment for these fish, would say its prob better to pick up 5-6 smaller discus and grow them up together. Also they do require a bit of know how but this forum will provide that and actually keeping them will fill in the gaps, and they require a bit more effort to keep happy than most tropicals so if she's not willing to do the maintenance then i wouldnt bother. Worth it though :good:

They get along with almost all the fish we normally keep.. My discus group dominate the angels and aggercive towards fully grown syno cats during the feeding time.

But u must get them fairly middle sized.. Small fish get stunned easily.

Go for fat heads and fully erect fins if you r going for small fish.

What type of fish do the Discus get along with?

Cory cats are perfect tank mates, i have a large group in with mine, rams also have 1 in there, i have a few guppies and plecos aswell. tetras also good, think alot of people keep cardinals with them.

Great fish to keep and make a wonderful display, not as hard as people say I just change a large amount of tap water each week but tankmates need to be thought out properly as the hardest part of discus in my experience is feeding. I had issues with angelfish and clownloach competing too much for the food so I have the discus now as the main fish
good tankmates are cardinals and rummy nose, and corydoras. I also have 5 plecs in my tank with no issues and a pair of kribs
