The reason I am even questioning what other people on this forum have said is because of my LFS. They are the most knowledgable LFS in town and they have a display tank that is well planted and has both large discus and large angels living together. The tank is about 75 gallons with other inhabitants ranging from clown loaches to dwarf gouramis. My wife and I are planning to buy a 60 gallon in the next few days and we are both really hoping to be able to put angels and discus in this tank together.

I am asking for other people's experiences or what you have been told about these two fish living together. I plan on picking the brain of the guy who runs our local LFS also, but I thought asking this much larger and varied source would be better than one opinion. Thank you in advance for anything that you can tell me. :)

i cant see why they wouldnt get along.. i dont think they would nip eachother, supposed to both be community fish, i think the angels would take away from the discus though

make sure u research the discus well, and makes sure the tank is stable before adding them

Hi, I have an angel with my discus. I only have one discus and one angel. They are the best of buds. I do know that the angels will get to the food faster than you discus, make sure the discus get enough food.

I think a display of nice colored angels with discus would be very pretty. Choose your tank mates carefully. Keep a nice peaceful tank for your angels and discus.

:)

Generally the reason why people don't advise keeping Angels and Discus together is because the tank may be to small or because Angels can carry a parasite called cappilaria. This doesn't harm the Angels but can be very dangerous for the Discus. So the majority of Discus keepers don't bother trying to keep the two species together in order to protect their Discus. It can and has been done on many occasions and a well planted Discus and Angel tank is a real spectacle and well worth a shot. :)

I've seen discus and angels together before in show tanks and it's nice.

Have you considered balas instead of angels?(Sorry, I'm a bala guy)

Anyhow, I would try some experiments with different foods once the tank is going.

Angels are faster than discus and more aggressive during feedings like others said, but if you find a food they won't eat it will give their tank mates an uninterupted meal.

I will make a thread about "Food for eash tankmate", take a look.

Just one example of an Angel and Discus tank, I think Altum Angels are used in this instance -

Take away how? Aesthetically? or are you talking about stealing food?
i was thinking taking away from their beauty... not sure if u think the same :)

I had these two together at one point.A few points...........
-Discus need special care, therefore read and do some research.
-Do not introduced the discus before the tank is fully matured/cycled,otherwise you'll end up with some expensive fancy dead fish.
-Do anything you need to do to this tank like introducing plants,CO2 system and stabilized the tanks and water parameters before introducing your new discus.
Now on with the angels......
-If they are of similar size,do not introduced the angels first.Angels are more aggresive and meaner than discus, and once they concider this little area theirs, they'll fight for it.Discus also take way longer than angels to get used to the new tank, and I am not even mentioning about not eating for the first few days, etc. So please, let the discus claimed this tank their new home before the angels do.

But you will see that a well planted tank with these two in it is no less than stunning.
Will love to see the final result.
Good luck!

Thank you to everyone that has responded. To be honest, I am quite relieved to hear that our dream tank is still possible. I knew that there would be a lot of work and research involved, but when we look at those tanks, we know that it will all be worth it.

I am truly excited about starting the research, so my next question to everyone is what are some good resources. I will definitely try and scour the internet for all that I can find freely available, but what are some good books about either angels, or discus. I realize there are multiple types of each so I guess I am asking for general information so that we can get a better idea as to what type of each that we would want to put together. I will look into the cappilaria parasite (Thanks for the heads up ryan :) ) once we get more things about the tank figured out.

My opinion is that they complement each other very well. The colors of the discus are stunning, while those of the angel are much duller and we find that the flowing fins of both fish compliment each other very well. It's just our opinion. :)

I agree with you on the fact that the two will complement each other very well.
Yes it is true that discus have a more varied and colorful spectrum when it comes to colors, but don't be fooled by the angels. You may only see a few varieties like the golden, blacks, marbles and the regular ones with the stripes, but go on line and check out some of the websites that sale angels. You will be stunned! You'll be surprised too, they aren't that "dull".

But I can tell you have taken the first big step,to ask everything you can about these two,and that's a good sign on my book.
