I like my sponge. Easy to clean, doesn't really clog up (though it does attract my pest snails) and it sucks in a lot of water.

Daft question then but ... Is there any particular type of sponge to use? I assume that it has to be new and free from fluids/detergent, etc but any specific type?

Cylindrical sponge to go with powerhead. Well, dad bought the whole filter anyway so sponge was included.

If you go for the usual sponge, of course it needs to be clean and have some pretty big gaps too for best flow.
