After having a tank for 2-3 years running fine with no issues past the teething troubles in the first weeks all my fish have died over the course of 24 hours! I have no idea why

I found dead 5 blue tetras 6 black phantoms 5 rosy tetra and a rainbow shark this morning, on returning from work I found 2 cherry barbs dead

I have tested all i can think of (I work in a store that sells fish so I have access to every test kit there is) its text book perfect, soft water area

I hadnt done a water change recently (due this weekend I do them every two weeks) nothing added, no children to pour anything in, covered tank no chemicals used no change of sprays like room deodorant nothing, no burning of anything in the community nothing to explain it

No damage on the bodies other than the shark who it looks like died first and was slightly fin damaged and no sign of illness, brought new fish maybe a week and a half ago 5 pentazona barbs and I had one already I have lost NONE of them!!! I am currently the owner of 3 cherry barbs and 6 pentazonas, who knows what I will have in the morning

Only thing out of the ordinary was a 1/2 hour power cut the other day, but come on 1/2 hour!!! that doesnt kill a tank of fish and the chemicals are normal

hmmm. Have you checked your temperature? The heater might be stuck on or not working at all... if everything else looks fine that's my only suggestion.

New fish could of fetched something in with them, could be a bacteria infection, I would medicate with losing that amount of fish.

Thanks for the replies

In order of post

yes temp fine and normal

if the new fish are the source why they the only ones to survive, surely they would have died first? I dont know of a fish capable of carrying a disease that it is immune to -_-

and I started with a bio orb and so still use the same substrate from that when I got a bigger tank I simply moved bacteria water and all and then added more substrate to start it as such I dont get pockets that you can get under gravel areas with say a plant over it, as all the surface is exposed to water and grows the bacteria there is no problems moving it or anything so pockets dont form and I have only silk plants, I do such regular water changes that nitrate and algae issues have not caused me to want to add the headache of ever swapping to real plants

Thats terrible ....

I'm new to this stuff .. just my two ignorant cents.

Sounds like a toxic tank problem ... I guess you already checked Copper .. if the fish were healthy all along ... I would guess something is in that tank. how does the tank smell ??

Hydrogen Sulfide ?? .. from downed filter ??

"brought new fish maybe a week and a half ago 5 pentazona barbs and I had one already I have lost NONE of them!!! "

Thats a hint ... ??

Maybe you should speed up the water change BUT save some water... somethings got to be in there ??

Good Day ...

Yeah did a 50% one as soon as I saw the problem

They have been in the tank for a week and a 1/2 no issues then died in a day so its something thats happened within the tank Im sure, not metals from outside.

I guess the new fish or the power cut have to be at a root of it, what else can it be? Nothing else has changed

What can a fish carry to kill a tank full of fish and survive themselves, or what can a pentazona survive in water than no other fish can

I wonder if it could be that dreaded 24 hr flex bacteria??
I did a water change and bam! they ended up getting it, I lost 5 in two days that were all fine prior. all is well in my tank for now....
Good luck with yours

maybe just keep partial water changes going and keep an eye on fish for any further signs of illness. U haven't got an ammonia spike or a drop in Ph this can happen when water changes are not done... waste just makes water toxic and causes Ph to drop this happened to me it was 7.4 and then dived to 5.5

Just a helpful thought :D

If the fish that you bought did fetch something into the tank, they built a resistance up to it, where the other fish haven't been in contact with it and haven't built a tolerance up to it.

What is your tank temp?

Do you use a vacum to clean the gravel when you do water changes?

Please answer these two questions.

bugsy.... :D
