water changes will help. i do a gallon water change out of my 5 gal fry tank and 2-3 gal out of my 20gal fry tank every 2-3 days. and i think a tank of platies would be awsome! i was going to do that when i first got my 20gal, but it was too expensive so i went to bid goldfish and now it is a fry tank! i personally would gat all kinds of platies so there is a lot of color variety or get a few kinds that would lokk good if bred, like white mickey mouse+ blue spot, sun set wag+ mickey mouse, etc about the brine shrimp- i dont know, i have never used them....
yeah that'd be really cool!!! off to do a water change!!! :good:

yeah i should probably go do my water change...... i'll do it in a second :#

A platy is not a cold water fish. It can survive down to about 68F, 20C, in good health, which means it needs no heater in a typical heated home. A cold water fish, like a goldfish for instance, can over-winter in a pond that has ice on the surface and bounce right back the next spring. When I was a child growing up, one of our neighbors kept goldfish in a pond that got an average of a foot thick of ice each year. Each spring, he just started feeding again when the ice melted. That is a cold water fish.

I wouldn't keep platys here in the uk without a heater.
Even now in march the temp gets down to 50 degrees which is about 10c at night.
My goldfish in their pond outside survived -15 degrees last winter they are true cold water fish

no i wouldnt keep platys outside. sorry when i say coldwater i mean temperate. the water in their tank is quite warm - as in slightly warmer than room temperature during the day when the light is on. i heard that some subspecies of platys were temperate and some tropical (i never knew that any were tropical until i started this forum) and they all seem very healthy.

oh and by the way: would it be all right to put snails into a just-platy tank??? because my sister has snails that keep being eaten by her goldfish :-(

snails would be fine with platies. i had a mommy snail in my fry tank but she kept having babies (soooo small) so now i have the mommy snail and 11 babies.... :/

wow a lot of babies!!!!!!! saw Happy today, hovering near to the top of the tank!!! he's definitely grown!!!!!!!!!!!!! today marks a whole week since the day i found him  !!! RIP to all his brothers and sisters that didnt make it through the night :-(

i know what you mean- my platy had 57 fry and she had ick and then the babies got sick soon after so i lost a lot and now only have like 20 :-( . but they went through their first growth spurt so the are getting teeny weenie bars on their tail. (gold twin bar platy like the one below)

yeah tell me about it- the last thing i like to do is finish cleaning 4 tanks in a row then find out the filter wont start b/c of all the fish crap in there and i have to clean it out  !

Hi guys!!! does anyone have any pics of a platy with a gravid spot because two of my platys look like they have them. (gulp) :good:

shimmer.jpg
so this is Shimmer is she a micky mouse platy or does she just look like it??? if you look near her back fins you'll see a black spot - is it a gravid spot??? thanks!!! :)

yeah she does have one but the only way i can really tell their prego is looking from the front- if they are fat, they are prego. i have seen some platies in the pet store with huge gravid spots but are not pregnant...
