Cycle Diary... Finished @ Day 127!

Ok I have just done a small check and I have been putting 7mm Ammonia in each night, and according to the Aquarium Calculators I should have only been putting 4.7ml Ammonia in.

So if I have been overdosing the amount of ammonia needed would it have made a massive difference, or has it just slowed things down a bit?

Cheers

Wow, you may have been victim to one of the things we warn about but seldom see. If you get your ammonia dosing up around 8ppm it will encourage the development of a different species of autotrophic bacteria that's not the one we want. What happens is that it makes it more confusing because this bacteria also processes ammonia, so you think things are ok, but then when you correct the error and the ammonia levels become lower, this species can't tolerate the lower levels and dies. Then there is a period when the biofilms this species has created need to deteriorate and free up spaces for the Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira that we want growing there, so, theoretically, the regular dosing at this high level could cause a slowdown in your overall process.

The thing is, though, you can't really know any of this for sure (without setting up a multimillion dollar university lab, lol) and the only reasonable action to take is to simply correct your ammonia dosing. You wouldn't want to start over with new media as that would probably be even slower, and there's no evidence that there won't be plenty of the correct bacteria in there also, so you just have to drop back down to 4-5ppm and then just continue carrying out the correct process for fishless cycling. I just wouldn't worry about it either! Maybe it won't have been a problem anyway!

How many days are you into your fishless cycle and remind me, have you had what seemed to be a "nitrite spike" phase? (or I can go back and read at some point, lol)

Hiya WD,

I'm on day 40 today... I didn't put ammonia in last night because it was still on 1 and this morning it hasn't budged! So im going to wait till tonight to put the right amount of ammonia in.

I believe I have had the nitrite spike phase, I went through about a week of "top of the scale" Nitrite. Which appears to have gone back down to 0 now. But what worries me is that the ammonia wont get back down to 0 within 24 hours but now the Nitrite's will!

Thanks for all of your help!

Very, very common for one or the other (ammonia or nitrite) to "stick" (seemingly) at that last 1ppm at this late stage and it seems to be ammonia sometimes, rather than nitrite. It just requires another round of patience from you and a steady hand.

Should I always wait for the ammonia to drop to 0ppm before adding any more? Don't worry I know its only 4.5ml now not 7ml... I can't believe I did that! :(

I usually just advise people to relax and wait for zero when this happens, as it helps create less build-up of acids in the end, but I have limited success with people actually listening to that advice because they are usually just too anxious to get more ammonia in there!

Don't worry I am absolutely listening to you! I will re.check tonight and if it is back down to zero then I will add more, otherwise I will stay well away! :)

Thanks for all of your help!

really unlucky you were adding so close up to 8ppm, amazing how many little things can go wrong for people

here's hoping it sorts itself out quickly!

Well by my estimations it could have been anywhere between 5 and 8, might not have been that bad. I'm still stuck on 1ppm of Ammonia, but i'm just going to wait it out and then we will see what damage has been done then! Hopefully it will correct itself! :)

Just updated Page 1 with Day 40 and 41, Ammonia still stuck at 1ppm but im just going to keep waiting!

Ok I still have no movement at all, ever since my Week long nitrite spike I still be seeing small ammonia readings.

I still haven't added any ammonia but is there anything else I could do? or should I just sit and wait?

Cheers

You know, since its being so stubborn and since you're showing nitrate(NO3) at 160 all the time now (which I assume means highest test result so reality may be higher) I think you should do one or even two 90% gravel-clean-water-changes with a recharge of ammonia afterward. I think that high nitrate may have something to do with that stubborn bit of ammonia and a water change at this late stage will sometimes kickstart problems.

I'll be offline mostly next few days but will be interested to hear how it went eventually...

You cant leave me! :(

Ill probably break everything! lol

Ill report back and let you know anyway!

haha, One quick question though, im also away for the weekend, is it worth me waiting till I get back to do the water change?
