Cryptoheros Cutteri 'rio Mongu' Journal

Yeah they were great, but the male was horrible to the female which kind of ruined them for me. :(

The numbers are dwindling, probably down to 30ish now. Unsure if its down to external filter sucking them up or just dying off? :/ probably should have been more prepared and netted the intake. Might remove parents and babies, give the tank a good scrub as it has been off limits due to the spawn and then let them go at it again. Would be easier to feed the fry to in a seperate tank I think.

Thoughts?

I dont know if they need a period with their parents like some fry seem to benefit from (from what Ive read) but I imagine it would definitely be easier to feed them in a separate tank if you have one ready for them :) Hurry up and raise lots of babies as I would like to put my name down for some hehe :)

Well its no hassle to swap them over to another tank, the sponge filter is running in the main tank so it just needs moving across. Will have a go at the weekend I think.

The move/change didn't go well. Me removing the babies has obviously upset the apple cart and the male went besurk and has absolutely battered the female. :-( I have never seen a fish so bad. She looks like she has been through a shredder. Not just the fins, but her body is also pretty tatty. I have removed the male and dumped him in another tank and appears to be behaving himself. The female is still in the Rio and i am going to be doing a 25% water change daily to try and help her recover. The lights on the tank are off all day too to give her a little privacy. Haven't seen her eat anything as of yet, but i will keep trying. Bloodworm and Prima should be high enough in protein for her to make a full recovery i'm hoping.

Pretty gutted atm so say the least, wish i had of left well alone. And to top it off, i think there was only about 10 babies left in the tank anyway.

Ahhh, man - so sorry! You couldn't have known he'd go all psycho on you like that :( She's in good hands with you, if she can recover she will!

Fingers crossed!

I should have known. He wanted to breed again, she wasn't ready so he hammered her. Just observed her eat a small bit of Prima, but nothing much.

Aw, thats terrible. Hope she recovers. Solitary confinment for the male I say! DOck his meal card. 1 flake a day.

He seems ok where he is. Not really his fault, it was mine for interfering as they were best of friends before hand. Feeling pretty guilty about it right now.

I know, sorry for half teasing. It's easier to make a mistake with fish, then doing things right all the time. Now you know for next time.

I should have known from previous experience really. Cryptoheros are renowned for it. A couple of weeks should see her about right i reckon. Just hope the male can stick it out for that long too. Left the female in 'their' tank so that when he is re-introduced it is into her tank and not his.

Have swapped the female over to the community tank and the male back to the Rio as the female just wasn't coming out whilst alone in the Rio. She has been out a fair bit and has taken both Prima and Bloodworm. Even took a sneaky few catfish pellets.

Obviously the extra tank mates has given her a little more confidence. Also carried out a 30% water change. Fingers crossed she should be on the mend now. :good:
