Critter? (Solved!)

I wonder if it is invasive?
As do I....as I mentioned earlier, I've lived here my entire life...NEVER encountered these things as a kid, I would have been fascinated by them...spent a good bit of my childhood playing in the dirt, I would have noticed these perfectly symmetrical holes, if nothing else

Could you have someone who deals with bugs on a professional level(no an exterminator)come out and ID it. I mean if it is a tiny tremor, better they get eaten than you, right?🤣

One thing of note...no one has questioned my spilled beer comment, why I mentioned it, lol

It just seemed obvious that you'd either spilled the beer to try to force the creature out of the hole, OR, and this was my assumption last night - spilt some near the hole to attract bugs that might lure it out

Now this would be really cool but what if its an entirely new species? Or a species new to that state and country and was brought there by boat or plane...
Imagine if you discovered a new species!

I work at a university, and can contact the Biology department this Monday ;)

The tiny tremors are DOING the eating, lol

Ladies and gents, we have a winner....the dogs were playing right by my chair, and in the midst of me taking a gulp, they knocked the can right out of my hand when they plowed into my chair....here, flies LOVED spilled beer, soda, etc...it brings them in droves...especially during hot, dry days, which we've had for a while now...

My young friend, wouldn't that be marvelous?

Slappicus Creepmeoutacus has a nice ring to it, no?

Could be invasive, also possible that it's a critter that has expanded it's range and is moving into new territory where it wasn't found before. That happens, and even more so as climate change has had an effect on the ecosystem of many biomes.

Astute observation.

Out there just now, I poured a bit of beer around 3 of the holes where I've seen the critters today, that are within about 12" of each other

The flies descended, and were all over the beer dirt...a few even went down into the holes briefly...but were not attacked...apparently, the critters must be in position, at the top of the burrow, to attack...none were situated as such then, because the dogs were running around, keeping them hidden in their burrows...AND, they must be able to shoot back down into the burrow in a split-second, so body length may play a role in just how far away they can lurch...is my guess

I'll keep an eye on them....in the meantime, I've got some WC's to do...hope all are having a good weekend

Cheers🍻

I can't wait for Monday, so curious about what these are! I'm glad you're having fun observing your new alien friends though :D Have a good day/evening, it's late here so I'll be hitting the hay.

Thanks DD....but holes in the vid much too large...these I have are only 1/4" in diameter

And I've lived with cicadas my entire life, but have never seen holes like the ones I have, nor the critters
