If you are contemplating changing to sand for getting corys, just thought I would mention pool filter sand. Seems to be just that bit heavier and really doesn't seem to move much at all. I can go within half an inch of it when I am doing a water change and virtually none comes up.
You will love corys if you do decide to get some. Like you, I never really considered them but they are now my favourite fish. I have 5 bronze and 6 peppered along with 9 tetras and 3 otos and they are all brilliant community fish that love my soft acidic water. Cory's are laying eggs as I speak. My tank is still relatively new though so I am not too bothered about breeding just now until it is more mature but if one or two survived I would be well chuffed.
