Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

Masked or unmasked...we just have to get used to the lurgy and live with it.

What makes me laugh though are those who complain about having to wear a mask, yet every winter they walk around with 30 miles of woolly scarf wrapped around their face.....what exactly is the difference?
The difference is:

The scarf offers protection against the thing it is supposed to guard against (cold), so we use them in spite of their inconveniences.
Masks offer no such protection against COVID.

The difference is, they choose to wear a scarf. People don't like being told what to do. As for the effectiveness of masks, the jury's still out, like most things regarding covid. I think everybody knows we're all just making our best guess. I tend to follow my doctors' recommendations, obey the law when it doesn't violate my conscience, and avoid whining about the inconveniences as much as possible.

Regarding cancer: Every reputable source (and actually, every questionable source, too!) I've read says it is not contagious, and you can't get it from ingesting or inhaling cancer cells from someone else. So, I'll go with that for now. A few cancers are caused by viruses, and the viruses can be contagious. I'd guess that's what is going on with the Taz tigers? Except those are extinct...maybe you mean devils?

yeah i cant find the article that I read. until then just consider me wrong :)

Tasmanian tigers are extinct - I think you mean Tasmanian devils. They get a a nasty cancer (from memory, it think it’s called devil faced tumours) which is directly transmissible. That’s an anomaly though - most cancers aren’t transmissible. There have been a handful of cases where cancer has been transmitted from one human to another, but from memory I think they were the result of organ transplants. But there’s definitely no cancer cells routinely jumping between people and infecting them in the same way that bacteria or viruses do

Also, I was wondering why people think that masks do more harm than good. I can understand why people are sceptical of masks stopping transmission of covid, but I struggle to see why people conclude that masks are actually harmful

I concur. Masks protect the people around us (from sneezing/breathing particles), but they don't actually protect us from getting it. If everyone around you has masks on, then everyone should be protected from each other. When people choose not to wear a mask but ruin the whole idea of the mask wearing.

Masks cause more harm than good in the fact that you continue breathing what your body is attempting to expel.

Especially in the case of sneezes and coughs

That’s not true, they don’t cause more harm than good. They protect others around you from contracting the virus, which is the end goal.

I know saint fraudci is the be all end all here in the states. And he is on the record, both on emails and on video, stating multiple times that cloth masks are useless and unnecessary. So which way, western man.

Advid mask wearer, vaccinated 3x and (knock on wood) haven't had covid. Work in a super busy pharmacy and am thankful for the kn95 masks. Agree the fabric versions are not protective but I can feel difference with the 95's.

The design of a mask is for the air to filter through the mask material, not for you to breathe it back in. And with a sneeze or cough, the mask is helping keep your germs to yourself rather than spread it to others.

I think we will all just have to agree to disagree.
Covid-19 particles will pass right through an n95 face mask.

Tasmanian Tigers are struggling with a contagious cancer. There's two independent transmissible cancers known as devil facial tumour 1 (DFT1) and devil facial tumour 2 (DFT2). Both cancers are spread by biting and cause the appearance of tumours on the face or inside the mouth of affected Tasmanian devils. Haven't heard about it being contagious for other species though.
They are pretty sure the devil facial tumour is caused by a virus and the virus is jumping from animal to animal. This is why the facial tumour is appearing on animals. The human papilloma virus can cause cervical cancer and numerous other cancers in men and women, but it is the virus that gets transmitted from person to person. When the virus is established in a new host, that host can then develop cancer.

Whilst the virus can fit through gaps in the material that masks are made of, the virus is normally in droplets of moisture that are too big to get through these gaps. That's why masks get damp over time, due to the moisture in the air we breath out. So yes the virus on its own can go through a mask, but it doesn't normally happen because the virus is in a little ball of water that can't get through.

But yes, agree to disagree and move on :)
