I went into my lfs this week and they had a few orange chromides in a tank, I asked if it was freshwater and they said no. They said this was not harsh as these chromides are the result of parents who bred in freshwater whose parents bred in freshwater etc, in short they said it was kinder to put them in freshwater than in brackish – he cited many other fish who come from hard/soft water or low/high ph and get acclimatised through each generation. I avoided buying them but was very tempted…is what she’s saying true??

Thanks

Orange chromides like all chromides are brackish fish which when adult must be kept in brackish conditions, juviniles are found in freeshwater as this is where the adults spawn but as they grow they move further down stream until reaching the saltier parts of the river where they remain as adults until they have the urge to spawn.

The three known species of chromide are

Green chromide; Etroplus suratensis

Silver chromide; Etroplus maculatus (orange chromides are a varient of this species)

Canary chromide; Etroplus canarensis

Are all chromides brackish?

They're closely related to madagascan cichlids too aren't they - are madagascan cichlids brackish?

THanks

I'm pretty sure these are asian cichlids, and wouldn't have any direct relation (other than being cichlids) with madagascan cichlids :)

yep chromides are the only Asian cichlids from my understanding

and i think that oranges are trhe smallest ( :dunno: ) not sure on that though
