Hi there

Was wondering about the different types of 'corydorus', have looked in index but still not sure what I am after. Is there any kind that would be suitable for a 10g (that already has a few platties?)

Someone replied about them in another thread I made about stocking, but am not sure about 'peppered' or what kind? Don't want a monster! If you knew their common and species names that would be a huge help, I absoultely want to make sure what I am buying and sometimes they don't have alot of labelling! (ie just catfish!)

thanks alot

pygmy cories,
there a two or three species that are called pygmy cory
C.pygmaeus(2.5cm), C.hastatus(3cm) and C.habrosus(3.5cm)
perhaps you could get 6 to 8 of one of those species(or a mix) for your 10G.

Hi leksie :)

Size wise, you can't go wrong with any cory cat. The biggest ones you are likely to find at your lfs will only get to be 3" at most, and most do not even get that big.

The problem with corys is that they are schooling fish and you should get several of them. At the very least, you will need 2 or 3. They play together and if they are alone they will be shy and sometimes timid.

The most common corys you will find at the lfs are bronze & albino C. aeneus, Peppered corys (C. paleatus) bandit corys (C. metae - these are a little on the smaller side, so if you can get them, that's good) & C. juliis.

C. panda is a small cory too, but it is delicate and hard to keep, so I would suggest passing them by.

The number of corys you can get will depend on how well stocked your tank is already. They do require very clean conditions, so weekly water changes are necessary.

They are great little fish and you will enjoy having them. :D

Just a tip, I bought 3 cory cats, all different. They did hang out a little, but they weren't as active as I knew they should be. So I got one more of each kind (except the leopard.. can't find it again). It's amazing the difference in activity now! They are SO adorable!!!
Good luck with your tank! This forum will serve as a great lifeline to you and your fish!
