Computer Specs

Forgot to mention I have remote control for home theatre (never use it)

And I have wireless keyboard and mouse and Lcd display.

Not that it matters but thought I'd include them anyway.

In a nut shell, it's just an everyday HP Pavillion, with Compaq Lcd display, Cannon Printer, and D-Link broadband modem.

Nothing fancey but thats my lot.

Happy computing

Specifications don't really matter... the best computer in the world will be obsolete in 6-12 months.

What matters is whether the computer does what you need it to, and will continute to do so for a reasonable length of time. Can you do your work on your computer? Is it secure and safe from viruses? Does it play the streaming media you want to listen to or watch? Does it play the games you want to play? Does it have space to store all your photos and music? That's all that matters.

I have a 1997-vintage PowerBook 3400 that still earns its keep playing streaming media like web radio programmes in my bedroom and working as a print server. At a stonking 240 MHz and with a staggering 60 MB of RAM to play with, it's stats don't look too good anymore. But back in the day, it was the fastest laptop in the world. Ultimately, focusing on the specifications of a computer -- instead of what you create and share with it -- is, frankly, rather like worrying about the size of your sexual organs instead of trying to be a better lover.

Cheers,

Neale

Anyone know if my setup is good or not?

Have to say I was like you Lol, running windows 98, 1gb ram, cheapo graphic etc, until my recent upgrade. Have to say it was worth the investment.

Applications load up within a blink of an eye, I can load up photoshop CS2 in under 3 seconds !!

Games play very smooth and simple tasks such as running a virus scan, searching the computer take minuets instead of hours.

As with all things computer, in 6 months there will be a new better thing out but to be honest, if you buy the best around at the time, you can happily get away with not upgrading again for at least 3 years if not more before you really have to.

Yes some people take it fair to seriously and use it as a status thing but I just ignor them Lol.

Since I don't play games anymore, my setup does quite nicely...

I've got a 17" G5 iMac, 1.8ghz w/ 1.5gb ram, with a Sony 17" LCD hooked up as a second monitor.

Then I've got an older G4 1ghz 15" Powerbook with 768mb ram. It's old (not as old as Neale's Powerbook :p), but isn't slow at all for normal web browsing and everyday stuff.

nice, I was considering an apple macbook, but seeing as though I could get a beastly PC for that price I stopped

The problem with the MacBook is that it doesn't have a traditional graphics card. The processor has a special unit for graphics, and while it handles video fine, apparently performance is not that great when playing games that expect an ATI type graphics card. Out of the box, the system RAM (512 MB) has to be shared by the processor and the video subprocessor, and the results aren't that great according to MacWorld. Increase the system RAM and things get much better, but it still isn't a "gaming system". These problems, being hardware-related, hold regardless of whether you are running OS X or Windows (or Linux or whatever).

The MacBook Pro, by contrast, has a standard ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card.

Cheers,

Neale (happy MacBook Pro user)

So? Install Windows on your Macbook...

Ya, I realize that about the integrated graphics, and that's the one reason I probably wouldn't get a Macbook for myself...

Dont know the make as it was made for me at a Comp Fair, as Computer blew during house move and was desperate for a computer.

Cost 200GBP.

AMD Athlon Processer
300GB Combined HD
NVIDIA GeForce GX 5500 Graphics Card
crappy 15" Packard bell Monitor as dont see the Point in mega Expensive monitors.
Tesco - Technics Cinema Surround System
dunno the rest.

Okay, Completely home built.

AMD Athlon 1800+
Gigabyte GA7 ZX mobo
640MB Ram
330GB worth of hard drives
NVidea 7600GS AGP graphics card 256meg
Sound Blaster Live Platinum
Audiotrak Inca 88 sound card

A bit crusty round the edges now, but plays UT2004 pretty well. And of course lets me post on TFF!!! :hey:

I'm due a serious upgrade soon, probably AMD AM2 processor, fast graphics card, loadsa ram, huge hard drives.

That is if i don't spend it on another tank first!

edit - upgraded graphics card and nice big hard drive!

Main System

AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ @ 2.7GHz (stock is 2GHz)
Asus AN832-SLI Deluxe
4GB OCZ Platinum DDR
1.2TB (Terabyte) storage in 3 SATA 3.0GB/s RAID arrays (including WD Raptor RAID as system/boot drive)
128MB Nvidia 6600GT PCI-Ex VGA card (not a games player at all)
LianLi PC70 chassis with 550W True rated PSU.
Logitech DiNovo Media Desktop input system
MS Windows XP Pro

Server
Dell Poweredge 1800
2 x Intel Xeon 3.6GHz CPU's
2GB DDR2
2TB (Terabyte) SATA 3.0GB/s storage on CERC RAID Controller
MS Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Edition

All running on a Gigabit network with Linksys wireless router providing the wireless throughout the property (including repeaters).

Also have 4 laptops of varying specs around the house that the wife & kids use primarily (although one of them is out of bounds as I use it when I am out of the house).

You may be wondering why I have all that storage, well, I do a LOT of video editing work & RAW uncompressed footage takes up a lot of space (and when you have at any one time upto 20 digital tapes on the system you soon run out of room!!!)

I have the following:

- AMD Athlon XP 3500+
- 1GB DDR 400 RAM
- 50GB HDD
- Geforce 6600GT 256MB Graphics Card
- 17" Flat Screen
- DVD RW

want a new pc now though!

In the process of building this atm, it's up and running but I havnt finished adding to it, bit short on cash atm.

Mobo: Asus P5NSLI nvidia nforce 570
CPU: Intel D 930 pressler
Gfx: nVidia 7300GT 256mb (gonna upgrade to a dx10 nvidia card when the prices come down a little)
Ram: 1024 mb DDR2 667mhz (gonna add at least another gig when possible)
HD: WD 250gb sata2 7200rpm 16mb cache (housed in an Antec hd cooler, will be upgraded when I can)
Case: Antec Sonata II (450watt PSU until more is needed)
OS: Windows xp pro x64 (until vista is out of beta and available in the uk)

Everything is at stock settings, not gonna overclock till it is finished and I'm happy with the cooling.

So still needs quite a bit of monetary loving before it becomes the rig I want it to be :p but with that said, it still runs oblivion at medium settings well above flicker rate and it is playable at the highest settings although I need more cooling before I'm happy to keep it on the highest settings. Those delta case fans that shift 190 cfm of air look tempting. :hey:
