Just joined the forum, you lot look a friendly and informative crowd, I'm at the stage where I'm thinking of starting an aquarium but I've loads of really stupid questions so bear with me.
Hi Beneric, Yes the water in your taps contains chlorine which is harmfull to fish and the (friendly) bacteria in your tank its easy enough to remove with chemicals from your local fish shop.
You've com to the right place if your looking to start a new aquarium. Have a look at the beginners section especially the fishless cycling topic. Fishless cycling is a process where you establish the correct environment in your tank before the addition of fish. In doing this you'll save yourself a whole lot of issues with ill fish and will gain a valuable insight into the chemistry inside the tank. There is a wealth of information on these boards. Enjoy
tap water does have chlorine in it, you need to get a water conditioner from your lfs (local fish shop) to remove it basically makes you tap water safe, they also remove any heavy metals etc. there are loads of different brands that all pretty much do the same thing.
just so you know the chlorine does not hurt the fish it kills the bacteria that are in your tank/filter which are part of your nitrogen cycle:
