Gotta agree, you can keep fish and do it all wrong for years, then you can find sites like this who will educate you properly.
I mean i have a mate whos been keeping cichlids for 4 years, he has a 5ft 100g filled with about 30 big cichlids all with hole in the head and he hasent done a water change in over 12 months.
When i first started on my own 15 years ago (i had Oscars at my parents house growing up) i did it all wrong, i had a 4x1x1 with oscars, Jag, convicts etc, with a solo internal sponge filter made for a 2ft tank! i filled my first tank up the day i got it and went and spent £40 on fish the next day and dumped them all in....tiger barbs with guppys, all bad choices, old books dont help either, most books pre the 200 era tell you, you can keep a pair of oscars in 3ft tanks.
I did waterchanges like once every few months up until about 10 years of fish keeping and i got the internet and i found out you are supposed to do it weekly!
Stick around here, experiment with hardier, cheaper cichlids, do a bit of basic breeding, do as much reading as possible and ask as many questions as you like, just dont jump in head first with demanding species and waste all your money, most of us here on this site have done exactly that because lfs's will tell you anything is compatible to make money.
Just trying to help and from experience don't jump in.
(i jumped in to a nano marine tank after 3 years of keeping to! what a fricken disaster that was!)
