55gal is a min for a group of 5 discus more than five is better as the more you have the more the aggression is shared

and yes i have kept discus before

from reading the thread in its entirety i strongly suggest you do not go for discus

most people pay the price for discus because they have researched them enough to know that they are worth that money and know the true value of money which in turn helps you look after them all the more (which is exactly what discus need)

Gotta agree, you can keep fish and do it all wrong for years, then you can find sites like this who will educate you properly.

I mean i have a mate whos been keeping cichlids for 4 years, he has a 5ft 100g filled with about 30 big cichlids all with hole in the head and he hasent done a water change in over 12 months.

When i first started on my own 15 years ago (i had Oscars at my parents house growing up) i did it all wrong, i had a 4x1x1 with oscars, Jag, convicts etc, with a solo internal sponge filter made for a 2ft tank! i filled my first tank up the day i got it and went and spent £40 on fish the next day and dumped them all in....tiger barbs with guppys, all bad choices, old books dont help either, most books pre the 200 era tell you, you can keep a pair of oscars in 3ft tanks.

I did waterchanges like once every few months up until about 10 years of fish keeping and i got the internet and i found out you are supposed to do it weekly!

Stick around here, experiment with hardier, cheaper cichlids, do a bit of basic breeding, do as much reading as possible and ask as many questions as you like, just dont jump in head first with demanding species and waste all your money, most of us here on this site have done exactly that because lfs's will tell you anything is compatible to make money.

Just trying to help and from experience don't jump in.

(i jumped in to a nano marine tank after 3 years of keeping to! what a fricken disaster that was!)

ok thanx for the advice and.... GO ARSENAL. I have just gotten a rainbow shark juvi, dont say my tank is too small my friend was keeping it in a 50L tank and it was getting to big and i have the biggest tank amongst my friends, if you wanted to know the measurements (btw onidrase i said 65G not 75) its 120cm w x 45.6cm h x 45cm d. I do love angels and also discus but if the discus must wait then they must. I assume you can keep rainbow sharks with angels so I'm gonna get angels which I love ;) and keep a couple stuff in there thanks for the info, harsh ondirase but thanx i geuss

btw i do do weekly changes

Glad you are taking an easier route, personally i have mixed Angels with a rainbow shark and firemouths and its been fine.

Deffo dont mix Firemouths or Rainbow Sharks with Discus, Angels are made of much tougher stuff and i have found adult male angels to be more aggressive than Firemouths.....infact Firemouths tend to be all bark and no bite.....but even the 'bark' could unsettle and kill wimpy Discus, it will put them off of there food.

so this means i dont have to give my fm's to my friend!!!! YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY i love my firemouths, its actually a bit of a relief not getting discus, i mean their beautiful but so are angels, their so fussy tho

No you dont have to give them away, just stock accordingly, it may go wrong and you will have to get rid of them, espech. if breeding happens, but they tend to occupy a different area of the tank to angels, so not many territory disputes, the Rainbow shark may ***** with the Firemouths, i forgot you had rams tho, rams will get a hard time from Firemouths and the Shark when they get bigger. (saying that i had a Blue Ram that was tough as nails and lived with breeding convicts years ago, in a neutral PH and a temp of 26c, had him in that tank for years)

woah tough one! with breeding convicts!! lol they swim up to the glass and puff at me hahaha, no dont worry the rams arnt going in the 250L

cool cool, like i said in the pm...you coudl go for this...

2 x Firemouth
small group of angels
shoal of high bodied tetras of some sort or some rainbow fish (this will busy the tank up)
one gourami (not dwarfs) like pearl or threespot (threespots can be very agressive)
Rainbow Shark

Lots of wood and caves.

sounds like a dream come true ;) does 8 angels sound small LOL  how much angels shud i get? they have soooo much stock and i get them for $0.90 :)

one fish i really want is an aulonocara firefish They are amazing, but the chemistry wouldmt work would it because they are african cichlid (apparently!??!?) which tend to live in harder water with a higher ph

no nvm its a malawi WWWAAAAYYY different parameters :X

8 angels sounds like a lot, but I've only kept them alone. 90 cents is a good deal though  they cost 6 dollars at least around here.

haha ya their little ones then i get a discount of 40% its good mate :good: just maybe too much :( I think il keep 4-6 if i can 8 bcause they all have different amazing markings!

Stick with the plan, I know how tempting it is to buy every fish in the store, but some tings just don't work with each other

Get the angels, keep the firemouths and the shark, I think pearls would be okay, get a shoal of deeper bodied tetras (bleeding hearts are my favorites, but I think black skirts will work if they aren't too nippy. Never kept them before.)

Avoid getting any more cichlids, just avoid that section of the store in general.

4-6 sounds a bit better, but wait around and somebody else who's kept a group of angels to confirm or deny the number you can keep.
