Cold Marine Aquarium

That's quite cool!! BUTi do like warm marine tanks better!! Interesting read though!!

I emailed the dude directly last night so hopefully he will give me a clue.

You will need a chiller later on in the year for the tank to run as most native species will not tolerate high water temps.

It is done a fair bit and makes for some very cool tanks.

Right I now know where the guy goes so I think when the weather picks up im gonna head up there and check out the rockpools, not to bring back anything but to have a look and see what sort of life I can find.

If it's doable enough then I think i'll have a go and set one up in a 10G tub for now.

Only prob is water changes as i don't fancy a 5 hour round trip every other week.

Could you use normal reef salt to mix in plain RO or would it have to be NSW for the cold water species.

Just thinking of the natural ingredients in NSW [plankton etc].

Depending on what you are planning to keep I cant imagine using RO and a brand of salt would cause any problems. Sea water is Sea water, only the temp is different. Just my view on it.

pretty sure you can as you can use uk sea water for normal marines so i guess you can do the reverse

I didn't think think you could use UK nsw for tropical marine. If you could wouldn't it have to go through some kind of heavy duty filtration and skimming first.

I have done a bit of research into this and it appears to be just as difficult if not time consuming as tropical marine so I guess I'll stick with what I got.

Yeah it can be done but IMO why bother? It is easy to get an RO unit and make your own. At least then you will know there shouldnt be any nasties in it. I can understand people looking into it but with the work and hassle it does make me wonder why some people actually do it.

These links give some info on running a coldwater marine system:

People use NSW because of all the particulate food that is in it (plankton and such) but it has to be in constant motion or it 'dies'

Just been through the other cold marine tank. Its amazing. Get some pics up of yours stevo!!!

Never thought about this. I only live 20 minutes away from a beach with a few rock pools. Im on the east coast though, so dont know if i'd find as much?

You should do mate. I came across a website the other day devoted to rockpools on the British coasts and it even told you what you could expect to find with a little searching.

Can't remember the name of the site but I just googled Exploring British rockpools.

The majority said you can expect to find crabs, shrimp and anemones as
well as others.

I'm even considering a 6 hour round trip down to Devon just to have a look.................is that sad? Lol

Not sad at all fella, I drive a 3 hour round trip sometimes to get to and from my local decent one, you will also find starfish and gobies, right now is their breeding time of year in our waters. Its not difficult as people think either, I use tap water, aqua safe and marine salt and I have a great balance as most of the trace elements are in the salt. I'm going back very soon as its early low tide this coming week so I'll get the pics up soon as I'm back. :)

Oh and the other great thing about cold marine aquaria is......................(other than the salt)....................its free :)

Will do, yeah go for it man, I have a tropical pico but now you mention that I may go salty. :good:
