Coffee Lover’s Corner Next to the Tea Room

Now THIS thread I like :lol:Pod coffee, espresso, fancy coffee shop coffee, cheap fast food coffee, old burned gas station coffee, even the other kind of gas station coffee where it's like a soda machine and you press a button and what comes out probably isn't actually coffee...yes please.

Just so long as it isn't light roast. Light roast is gross.

I'm going to fess up to being a pod user, although I wasn't for a long time. There are a lot of bad pod types too - and it's really hard to get just one to try so then you have to suffer through the remaining ones if you chose poorly and don't want to waste it. But, there are some tasty ones though (to me at least). I started using pods when I got really bad joint problems in my hands and couldn't clean my French press easily. Also they're convenient when you've got exactly 2min between meetings and want something hot without a fly that decided to go swimming in the pot.

When I want a mule-kick-in-the-head type of coffee I still pull out a French press. I've got a double-walled metal one that keeps the heat in really well. Since my hands are better these days I've also been wondering about getting a moka pot.

You are far more the coffee aficionado than I! Suppose part of my pod aversion comes from being frugal. Maybe things have changed, but last time I checked they were pricey. The online Pennsylvania roaster I use sells them. I am also very attached to my big red drip coffee maker.

No they are still pricey lol frugal is definitely not a word I can apply to myself with coffee. Some smaller/local pod brands aren't too bad for cost which is mostly what I get, but the beans and grounds bags from those companies would surely still be cheaper. I tried the reusable mesh pods once to see if I could work around the price point, but it just made tan water - truly horrible. I could see the bottom of the mug through it. Proper pod grounds are practically dust, so you have to have a special filter to stop the fine pod grounds coming out and then it's basically as much work and fiddling about as cheaper methods of making coffee, so....yeah, the only plus points are convenience/speed and not requiring any kind of dexterity.

Drip coffee makers are also pretty low dexterity; I would probably still be using one if it wasn't for the bug issue - fruit flies specifically. In one place I lived, if I turned my back on the pot for even a minute there'd be a bug in it even though they were mostly coming in through vents and things and not being produced inside my home. I read at one point that there are strains of them that think caffeine tastes sweet so I figure that's what I was dealing with.

Fruitfles in the coffee! Horrors! No flies in my kitchen except the occasional one that sneaks in when I let the dogs out. Also a few mosquitoes that drink me, not the coffee.

Have you ever heard of civet coffee? Some wild cat eats the beans & poops them out. Very expensive. Not my cuppa at any price.

Kopi Luwak....or Civet....hyper expensive stuff

...and available in Nespresso pods too

Speaking of French presses. Has anyone any idea where to buy a plastic French press? IE no glass at all.
Im in the construction industry and it wouldn’t last a day at work.
Ebay etc describe them as plastic but they’re only talking about the “frame” not the “jar”.

I have no idea but Google knows all.

I mostly like to drink Espresso because it has more health benefits which have a great impact on my body.
I like it because it contains a low number of calories which is good for my health. Espresso helps me to improve my digestion, helps me to weight my loss, and reduce the risk of cancer.
Espresso is my favorite because it increases my energy levels and I stay active, fit and happy all the day and I do my work more effectively.

I like to use my Bialetti Moka Cafe to make espresso. When the apocalypse comes, I can make it on a campfire.

My nephew makes great fresh roasted coffee. I recently found him (and hundreds of other relatives) via 23andme

Frappes, certain teas, a nice hot coffee... I like them all but I love a good frapp

Every morning I drink three or four cups of dark roast, Costa Rican, Nicaraguan or Cuban coffee. Recently, my roaster friend has had a lot of Nicaraguan, and I've been making that. I often check this forum while I'm savouring a cup of strong coffee.
I liken coffee to music - I like a cup with a strong bassline and a good drum pattern. There is nothing more disappointing than a tinny little light roast, brown coffee.

I was once told by a guy who had battled to breed his black neon tetras that he accidentally knocked over part of a cup of black coffee he had resting on the tank cover, and it ran into the aquarium. The black neons laid eggs right after. So even fish like a nice cup to get them going.

There’s an overwhelming misconception that light roasted beans are weaker than dark roasted. In actuality a light roasted bean is much stronger in caffeine content and usually more flavorful too.

Instead of thinking about the word and idea of “light” meaning less so and “dark” meaning more so, think about how lightly they’re processing the coffee bean and how much longer they’re roasting/processing the more familiar but weaker dark roast.

I worked in the coffee biz and traveled a lot because of the ravenous consumer base here in Seattle and this is one of the most misunderstood aspects of coffee.
