I have wanted a new fish tank for a year now and we are finally going to get one. I have already comprised from a 4ft to a 3ft since it has to go in my room. Now my dad is saying that a 3ft is too big and wants me to downsize to 21/2ft which sucks :/. I have measured my room and it can fit in, I can still access my stuff and now he is concerned about me knocking the tank and damaging it (cracking and flooding) with my desk.

Has anyone ever broken their fish tanks like this? Any pointers you can give that will convince my dad?

Cheers.

Well, its very difficult to convince dads and moms about these things. You could simply tell him that a 3ft is good and you'll still be able to "access your stuff."

There is usually no danger of breaking or cracking the tank if its in a tight spot. For instance, a book or two brushing against the tank won't do anything, but then a chainsaw or a hammer knocking the tank accidently might break it. So it would depend on what you store near the tank.

If everything fails, buy a bottle of chloroform and put your dad to sleep for a few hours :p (just kidding)

you could always say, the bigger the tank the thicker the glass therefore you NEED a 3ft tank so if the glass is knocked it will be less likely to smash!! :D

I know lots of people who have large tanks. They aren't that easy to break, as long as the occasional knock or unintended hit isn't crazy.
